You might also try some encyclopedias. Wikipedia has some information, but actual reference books might be helpful as well, particularly if they can recommend reliable sources.

What the hell is it??

A secret group who wish to rule the world with an invisible hand. They believed in "illumination", becoming enlightened through Hatha Yoga meditation.

Nothing as crude as that. The Illuminati were extremely wealthy people. They always governed indirectly, by having control of presidents, bankers, foreign relationship councillors. They were both cunning and wealthy. Maybe they still exist, maybe they don't.

I love that game, though if that is true, all the leaders have been dead for ages.

Yeah, but like the Illuminati, they could have passed on the mantle to knew people. THey always work under cover-names, like the Knights Templar.

For good reading, try RAW's
Historical Illuminatus Chronicles
Like most of what he writes, truth & folly intertwined.
And MOST DEFINITELY
1, 2, and 3 of Cosmic Trigger.
ABOVE ALL,
Coincidance. That rocked.

Seph, I think that link they gave you is inaccurate - Angels and Demons by Dan Brown has much more accurate facts about the Illuminati. I'll give you what I got from the book:

So the early Church is being its (formerly) tyrannical self, trying to supress all knowledge of science. Then Galileo comes along with his very convincing support of the Heliocentric Theory (now fact), so the Church condemns him to house arrest.

Now is when the Illuminati kick in:

While under house arrest, Galileo founds a secret society to topple the Church - The Illuminati. However, being the men of science that the Illuminati members were, they swore to take the Church down and bring about a New (and Secular) World Order through nonviolent political tactics (ever hear of Novus Ordo Seclorum, anyone?).

However because of the omnipresent Church, the Illuminati (in order to protect itself) mingled w/the other "outcasts" of Old Europe (IE Jews, Muslims, etc. They also used the Freemasons as a front). Joining the Illuminati was a bit of a quest - aspiring Illuminati first had to find this one passage in Diagramma (scientific thingie written by Galileo) - which would start them on their quest to find the Illuminati HQ in Rome - the Church of Illumination.

In order to find the CoI, one would have to follow the four tributes to science cleverly hidden as "Christian" tributes within four different Churches/Chapels (For the Four Elements: earth, air, fire, and water; the last one leading to the CoI). Supposedly, they form a kite when plotted on a map of Rome (However the true meaning behind that is the diagonals ironically form a Cross, and where they meet is the CoI)

The Illuminati supposedly dissapated in the 50s

Can anybody give me any info or a link to info about the Illuminati? I've recently dveloped a fascination with them.

Here are some great books I could recommend:

1.Einige Originalschriften des Illuminatenordens (Munich, 1787);

(Stuttgart-Bad Cannstatt: Frommann-Holzboog, 1977)

5.La Conjuration des Illuminés by Henry Coston (Paris: La Librairie Française, 1979).

6.Proofs of a Conspiracy Against All the Religions and Governments of Europe by John Robison (New York: George Forman, 1798; reprint edition, Boston: Western Islands, 1967)

7.Memoirs Illustrating the History of Jacobinism, 4 vols. by Abbé Augustin Barruel's (London: T. Burton, 1797-1798)

8.World Revolution by Nesta H. Webster (Boston: Small, Maynard and Co., 1921) reprinted with an index and bibliography (Devon, England, 1971)

9.Secret Societies and Subversive Movements, also by Webster (London: Boswell, 1924)

10.Fire in the Minds of Men: The Origins of the Revolutionary Faith by James H. Billington (New York: Basic Books, 1980)

11."Croquis ou Project de Revolution de Monsieur de Mirabeau" from Mystäres de la Conspiration (Paris 1791)

12."Les Idées de Mirabeau sur la Franc-Maconnerie" from Révolution Française (October 1882)

13.Scheme for the Political Penetration of Freemasonry, also by Mirabeu (Transactions of the Quatuor Coronati Lodge, vol. LVII, 1944, pp. 138-148)

Hope you're fluent in French and German. ;)

Wrong. The Illuminati was founded by Adam Weishaupt, and it was founded in 1776, long after Galileo's time.

Not according to Dan Brown :eyesroll:

Which seems to be where he is getting all his information from.
