At Least 180 Congolese Massacred in Refugee Camp
Saturday, August 14, 2004

GATUMBA, Burundi — Attackers armed with machetes and automatic weapons raided a U.N. refugee camp in western Burundi, shooting and hacking to death at least 180 men, women and children, U.N. officials said.

Burundian Hutu rebels claimed responsibility, insisting the camp for Congolese Tutsi refugees fleeing tribal fighting was a hide-out for Burundi army soldiers and Congolese tribal militiamen.

But most of the victims appeared to be women and children. Their charred remains lay among the cooking utensils and the smoldering remnants of their former homes on Saturday.

The attack late Friday echoed the killing during the 1994 genocide in Burundi's neighbor Rwanda and raised fears of retaliatory violence that could undo peace efforts in Congo.

You know...until communism was defeated and the Western world didn't have a common denominator to tie them all in to America's side, America was the biggest proponent, but now we feel like since not everyone agrees with us, it is a waste of time.

I despise the UN for many many reasons I invite all those who join in this feeling to join my home region: Alliance of Independent States

Yes pretty sad they never do a damn thing, when they do get involved its a damn joke you get involved you might as well do something but no they get involved they don't do much of anything at all. The governments of sudan and these other countries should do something as should private organizations but I'm not sure about the us government intervention is usually a bad thing have to step lightly with it

Many criticize the UN for doing nothing; I criticize them for doing too much. Too much killing, that is.

Everyone knows that the UN is inefficient and bungles a lot of the things it tries to do, that odsen't mean people won't keep on putting their stock in it like they have for the past 60 years.

The UN comes around for a few things, like humanitarian aid. However, they can't seem to defend their humanitarian installations, because too many limits are put on their peacekeepers. Every time this has happened, some country has to send in their troops to bail UN peacekeepers out. I don't think they've ever completed a mission without outside intervention.
Don't forget, btw, to condemn the Burundese rebels for this heinous act.

Eh, the U.N. is ridiculous. Personally, I would prefer if it quit making bureacracies, quit making resolutions, quit requesting money, just quit everything. However, it should remain as an open and neutral means of communication amongst nations.

People seem to think the U.N. is a lot stronger than the League of Nations ever was... I don't see it.

I'm adressing the OP.

Wait, the UN is inept beacuse people can kill them? If you're refering to putting themselves in that position in the first place, yes, but because they got killed by raiders?

Yes, U.N. should be strong like Hajekistan. Only weaklings die, the strong survive all!
