Are we attacked after we did something to them that was wrong?
So i say maybe, if it was Afganistan(taliban) then yes, we should free them from the taliban and warlords.
Sadly, we have failed to free anything but the capital from warlords. So half empty...

If its Iraq who didn't attack us then no.

Another one for maybe. It depends why we are being attacked, if the attackers are being careful about not killing citizens, if I could do anything, if I needed to look after friends/some members of family. If they were using nukes on us I'd rather just kill myself.

I think I'd be more of a hindrance to the army than an asset. I'm lazy, disorganised, completely unfit, and don't like being told what to do.

I'd do my country a favour, and not enlist :)

Edit: Oh yeah, that would be the UK.

I say us who are unfit for the army form our own army and die together as the unfit soldiers we are, defending our country, after being kicked out of boot camp. Think of all the medals we'd get. If we're going to get shot up anyway we may as well get some medals out of it.

I'm from Croatia and we also have six months mandatory military service for men. I already did my part, but not completely. I got out of it after only three months on account of my poor eyesight. But i did get to fire from an AK-47, I think I can even recall its year of production and serial number, it's 1989 ABA-2692, made in Romania.

It really depends on what your version of being "attacked" was. Someone flies planes into my buildings, I wouldn't. Someone invades my country, I might.

It also depends on what the war is for. If it was because I was simply defending my country I might. If it was for something stupid like oil or tax reform then hell no.

I'm from New Zealand.

I don't like "countries", I believe in people and friends. Why would I fight for a country full of people that I don't kow? If you ttack a friend (I walk around many nations) then you have a problem but patriotism is a thugs best friend.

15-08-2004, 04:31
The likelyhood of any of our countries being invaded is slim, you all realise that right? Well anyway, my joining the military would greatly depend on the following:

- Are we actually being invaded, or did someone just say a rude word?
- Do they really need the extra soldiers, or is it little more than an invasion of rats?
- Do we deserve to get our arse kicked or is it unprovoked?
- Are we being invaded by attractive strippers (catering to both sexes as and when, of course), or France?

Oh, and in case you didn't get it from the 'arse' comment, I'm from the UK :D.

Well, I'm from the US, and I suppose it depends on who attacks. If, say, it was China, I wouldn't bother to join, because they will just get pissed and start nuking everything in sight, with the help of North Korea I'm sure. However, if it is a nation run by some semi-sane leaders who don't look at world destruction as an acceptible alternative to loss then of course I would fight. I also foresee many sarcastic responses based on my post.

On a side note, has enyone here ever seen the movie Red Dawn? Its the one where the Soviets invade America and a bunch of teenagers rob the firearms/hunting store and go live in the hills, all the while wreaking havoc on the enemy with guerrilla warfare. Pretty good movie. I'd like to do that rather than join the army. Just let em' invade the South, and we'll call out the militia, get drunk, have a barbecue, and wipe the floor with em'. Afterwards we would mount their heads on the walls right next to our trophy deer collections.

USA: I voted maybe. It completely depends on the circumstances, but I would say that it's very unlikely. If it were, say, WW3 with Germany yet again at fault (sorry to pick on ya but you're the easiest example), sure. The basic requirement is that I would have to believe in the cause, otherwise I wouldn't. And I believe that war is an acceptable solution only in a very small range of circumstances.

Denmark. And with that said it's pretty much given by itself. Like Switzerland we have a general draft and I have served my time and is currently in the reserve. In case my country is attacked I have orders to report to my unit immidiately (I even have a special pass and train ticket for the purpose) and defend my country. I will rotate out of service in 31 years.

USA. Without a doubt. Whenever, wherever, my first responsibility is to protect the lives of my fellow citizens. Even if we were in a foreign country and I disagreed with the policies that put us there, I would go in the hopes that I could prevent the deaths of any of my fellow soldiers or of innocent civilians on the other side (although I know how incredibly difficult it can be to prevent such deaths).

Violence in reality is wrong. I remove my Violent temper in computer games. I would never take up arms against another man, no matter what the reason. (Unless they were trying to do somthing horrible to my family, but then again i guess we'd all act like that.)

If i had it my way-instead of the public fighting, i'd put all the world leaders in a boxing ring and make 'em duke it out. leave the people out of their capitalist plans.

Only to defend the homeland from an invader, and not on the front line.
Maybe as an intelligence officer or some who runs defense IT systems.

Not for pre-emptive attack/invading on another nation nor as a puppet of government for self-serving reasons.

PS - Australian ...

If China invades, I'd probably be put in one of those detention camps.

I don´t think so. I don´t think we today are morally superior to people 1000 years ago. At least we in Europe don´t use to kill each other anymore - except a few exceptions. Though the world is and remains a dangerous place, full of wars and conflicts.
I doubt that alliens are better creatures if they exist. Anyway: it doesn´t matter since they would not come here due to the pure size of the universe.

I'd wait for the dust to settle, per se (IE figure out who exactly was behind the attack, what their motives are, etc.). Then I'd probably join the military if it seems fitting. If not, then I'd help w/relief efforts at home.
