Great Olympic Opening

For those who didnt watch the opening (yet), it was a grand show, as usual. Very moving, truly great, international show of peace and human cooperation. Greece as the "inventors" of the Olympic Games, will make great hosts for the 2004 Olympic games. I gotta admit, I was close to crying because I was so happy watching it and it was such a heart-moving event.

Yeh, when the Cyprus team came out and it was only like 5 strong and our Hellenic brothers in Greece gave a massive cheer - that was great. Also the bit when they gave a massive cheer for Palestine, Iraq and Afghanistan.

Hehe, I hope that over the coming weeks we can prove those anti-greek English that we can put on an olympics games better than they will ever be able to.

I agree, I didn't hear any booing of any team at all; Britain, USA and Turkey were all cheered by the audience.

I agree, it was nice to see Irak, Palestine and Afghanistan welcomed so warmly. And also, considering past anomosity between the two countries, it was good to see the Turkish team welcomed warmly.

Yes, an excellant opening ceremony. Congratulations Athens.

Did you hear the Greek flag was at half mast?

Yeah the boat carrying their monthly supply of KY Jelly sank.

I somehow doubt SVT (Sveriges television, Swedish tv) would have done?
I think some people were expecting to hear boos, and so mistaked the cheers for boos.
Of course, i could be wrong, but I thought UK, USA, Turkey and others that you might expect not to be cheered, got very warm welcomes, I think the Greeks realise more than anyone that the Olympics should be above politics.

Hmmm I didn't hear any booing either. I'm glad everyone seemed able to appreciate that sport and politics are (normally) entirely different and completely unrelated. I really enjoyed the opening ceremony (even though it was held at 3 am in my country :( ) and i understand the excitement that the Greeks are experiencing as i was a performer in the Sydney Opening Ceremony. Its such a buzz. The only thing that did concern me was that singer...who was wearing the big blue dress...she just scared me...probably becoz she reminded me of a strange friend of mine ;)

I'm watching it now, about a half hour into it, in the US. I cried during the drum scene, then, when the fires lit the Olympic circles.

I'm looking forward to the rest, thanks for the information, everyone!

Did not hear that, apart of the Americans, Brits and Israeli's in the public nobody cheered them but nobody boohood neither from the neutral public.(Israel was not that popular...)

Great Afghan delegation in traditional clothing. Why do western nation (mine to) don't do that anymore. would be great to see the Austrions in Tiroler outfit again :p ). Or the Frenh with Alpino hat and baguette under the arm.

and why do the nations of the UK play football appart in the EU. championship or World cup when they are united in the Olympics?

Hmmm, a jalous US person speaks out about the Greek class..

Off course the Greek did not organise a tinny Texan barbecue (but you still find them around you :p )

They were nice, they were ruined partly by the commentary of Katie Couric and Bob Costas. Could those two suck more?

How many opening ceremonies have you watched to make this judgement?

I do admit though that there were elements that were copied from the Sydney Olympics Opening Ceremony.

Some of you have probably not seen my "Separated at Birth?" thread but did anyone else think that the olympic cauldron looked like a big joint?
