Woohoo! I love the Olympics. You always end up getting a sob story about some athlete that should have died 5 years ago but ended up fighting adversity to win a medal.

But seriously...its just downright fun to watch the games....each and every one. I don't care if its gymnastics, track, basketball, or whatever. In fact, watching the rafting events just rock! You not only get to be nationalistic, you get to watch the United States kick the rest of the world's butt!

Heh, no lose situation for us Americans. Oh, and for the rest of the world...saying you're not winning medals because you've chosen not to....that's just funny.

By the way, there is a swimmer named Inge for the Norwegian team (or is it Danish, I can't remember) who is REALLY HOT!

Well and mine is that the Olympics are bigger and seen by more people worldwide. Also the international character of the Olympic games and their "age" make them the largest and most impressive show of mankind's cultural achievements to date.

Usually the olympics are considered event seen by the most viewers, football (or soccer if you insist) world championships as the 2nd biggest event.

There are about all 200 summink countries attending to these olympics... and the only country not showing the games live is Indonesia.

You might be right. As an european I was sure football events were bigger than American football ones... wasn't sure about olympics though... but after a bit of research I can say European footy championships had more tv following than Sydney olympics (in Europe!)... so I guess I owe you... how big was the bet again?? ;)

I'm most anxious to see how US swimmer Mike Phelps does. This guy may make history by winning the most gold medals here. And he's only 19. Well, before he gets a shot at that record, he has to get past Ian Thorpe. He was very good at 2000, but I doubt he'll be a match for Phelps.

Since you are european, our football is different than your football. We call it soccer here and Football is more popular here than soccer is.

Football actually rules the airwaves here when its the post-season and the superbowl draws out the most viewers because of the commercials.

Because it is the most premier event! Basically people watch because alot of products run new commercials during the event. Most of them are pretty funny. Its a good way to get the family to watch the event! Some don't care about the game but will watch it due to the commercials. I don't know the rational behind it but that is how it is! The guys watch the game, everyone else the commercials!

I am sorry, but whatever your views about the UK and USA or anything to do with politics for that matter, from what I saw (via neutral SVT Swedish tv) was that the UK and USA both received a cheer and warm welcome. So did Turkey, Greece's long-time enemy. Palestine and Irak also got big cheers. ((By the way, I say this as someone who is against the war in Irak)).
The Greeks are not the most favourable to US and UK foreign policy - BUT, they know that the Olympics should be above politics.

I thought the opening ceremony was carried out very well and without any politics.

Perhaps on FOX, but here in EU we don't have censureship and heared the boohs. Off course the US and Israel got some applause from their own citizens in the public, nothing more.

The Greek citizens are even more anti extreme republican governments then their own government that is rather neutral against the US. About 90% is against Bush (not against the US people but today, both are seen as the same monster, just like Americans can/ were not able to make a difference between between the Nazi's and the other Germans (the majority).

Ok i'll give you the German Comment but look at the times back then! Here is abit different. I think the Greeks did a wonderful job and the crowd did give USA a very warm welcome as well as a warm welcome to Turkey and Great Britian and Most defintely for Iraq and Afghanistan. Agree 100%. That is what I posted before. In fact some boos and silence for Israel.

BTW I hope when the cycling ends in 15 min. it will be a great champ that winns and not a nobody like mostly in the Olympic cycling, a guy you never hear from again.

Bettini leads with a unknown Portugese.

And just from the radio: the Iranian sporter came back on his decission and will fight the Israeli because the Olympic comitee would exclude him for all his fights in other categories too.

It was on SVT1, the main channel of Sveriges Television ("Sweden's Television"). It's the public service broadcaster, and is editorially independent of anything, much like BBC in Britain.

I didn't hear any boos for USA and UK, quite the opposite - cheers. And I was surprised, as I would have maybe expected boos.

Nobody was booed, but yes, Israel did get the silent treatment. This was the closest to any overtly negative (ie booing) response as there was.

Yeah, but I think that most came from the US public. Most people in the stadion are not the common and real Greeks but the rich upperclass and company people at the opening of the games. I know the country and what is in the hart of the people in the streets. If you have spend a time there, you can not blind yourself for where their sympathie lies.

I would agree with you that the Greeks are certainly far from the most pro-American country in the world!!!
But most Greeks realise that the Olympics are above political. Greece is after all the home of the olympics, and the home of the olympic truce. They realise that the opening ceremony of an Olympic Games is not the time or the place to make a political statement by booing atheletes in an Olympic team.

It's not really a secret! The printed media is almost never totally independent, and few tv chanels are completely (have you seen the American Fox News channel on satellite!!). But SVT comes as close as is possible.

I actually managed to watch the opening ceremonies twice....... Once at night and then the next morning since my son fell asleep during the first viewing.

I loved the 3000 years of history and especially the part of the "future". That was lovely.

I haven't been watching that many of the matches/games, but I try to watch a little bit during each set of viewing times. I think all of the atheletes should be praised for getting to the games.

Did anyone else hear about how some of the French Canadian pilots (not sure if that is right or not... feel free to correct me if I am wrong) helped the Iraq players get to the games? That was very nice and shows what the games are truly about..... Unity and Peace.

It was actually the Australians that flew the Iraqis to the game :)

As for the athletes, I do applaud them for getting here. Even if they don't win, they're champions in my book. The 3000 year history part of the opening ceremonies was probably the best moment of the ceremony. That and the Iraqi delegation entering the stadium.

So far the games have gone off without a hitch and that is how I like seeing the games. Anything can happen in the Olympics. Upsets happen (See above and previous posts) and I love an upset.

FoB, Steph is actually right in this regard. China and India are great in the Olympics, mostly summer as is USA! The USA and other nations are good in winter too because of the money that is necessary to train people for the events they're in. Canada, though a winter nation and is good in hockey, isn't that high in the middle count. Mostly because of one thing! That is money.

I am sure that money had nothing to do with today's embarassment of the Basketball team. They have billions spent on them by the NBA to hype them around the world, and they are a joke. Money also can't replace natural talent and national pride which factors a lot into the olympics.

It is true that the current general feeling in Hellas (Greece) is relatively anti-American. This has to do with Bush and his policies though and not with US citizens. You got to remember here that Greece had a dictatorship from 1967 until 1974 which was supported by the CIA and most people still remember that. This resulted in a lot of Greeks immigrating to Germany, the US, Australia (the first big wave of immigration was during the greek civil war 1944-1949) and other places around the world. This huge diaspora has made Greeks more empathic to people from other countries since most have relatives living there. After the collapse ot the communist block though the country is experiencing a huge and unprecedented influx of refugees and immigrants so xenophobia is on the rise.

That said, Phelps was a joy to watch on the opening day! Shame about Kenderis and Thanou, the Greek commitee did the right thing to ban them before the IOC hearing. The tradition during the Olympic games has always been to cease all hostilities between all nations since ancient times.

A Greek.

I'm not all that familiar with the Olympic game system... any chance of the USA getting some sort of wild card second chance in basketball? It'd be a real shame if we are completely out of our best game. Seems like we finally have a reason to make Puerto Rico a state though... keep them from competing against us (we probably should have made them a state already in my opinion, but then we'd have to remake all our flags and we'd no longer have an even 50)! Oh well, even if Puerto Rico wins, you could consider it as a half win for the US.

Anyone see the Men's pommelhorse competition (part of the larger Men's gymnastics competition)? That is INSANE. I don't even think there are muscles in your body that actually DO what they did. It's like watching a fish go rock-climbing. Anyways, good job USA in getting the silver, and to Japan for getting the gold. I think Romania got the bronze, but I am not sure. China, the favorite to win, was in 8th I think.

Ouch China is dominating, as always. someone needs to show them the earlier point that they are too poor to have so many medals. Then maybe they'll give a few of those medals back.... Haha that'll be the day.

5:00 Pacific Time on Bravo for Individual Sabre! But you'll have to wait because you'll have to go through the tennis match before you can get to fencing. Foil was yesterday I believe it was.

And thanks considering most of the matches are before WE even see them! *giggles* I don't mind either.

Ok! This First before I move on to the next update which will be the next post here!

The first game of the Female Soccer Semi-finals is in the books.

USA took a 1-0 lead in the First half but in extra minutes at the end of the Second half, Germany struck tying the game at 1 all forcing extra periods!

In the First Extra time, O'Reilly knocks in the go ahead goal to make 2-1 and that is how the game ends.

Ladies and Gentlemen, Team USA will play for the Gold medal in soccer by defeating Germany 2-1 in Overtime! Good Job Team USA and hats off to Germany on a well played game.

I'm glad they finally beat their arch-rivals, something they couldn't do in the World Cup. Although Hamm and Chastain bring big name recognition to the team, their presence on the team might actually be hurting the whole. Hamm is 32 and Chastain is in her late 30's. With the talent pool so large for the younger generation, there were players more deserving of being on the team. But as a last hurrah, getting to the Gold Medal game is wonderful. I just hope Sweden loses because they seem to have our number.
