This is the complement to the "Best Generals" thread. In it, I already nominated mine: Ambrose E. Burnside, inventor of the sideburn.

Let the games begin!

He was actually a rather good Corps commander in the Union Army, his men called him Uncle John. Underestimating the accuracy of Confederate sharpshooters to you're own personal woe does not neccessarily make you a bad General...

SInce we're on the topic of Civil War Generals, how about Oliver Howard.

Well, he wasn't killed by a sharpshooter so much as cannon fire.

Silence all! Davistania has spoken!

He was shot through the eye by a sharpshooter during the Overland Campaign in 1864, he was laughing at a sergeant laying on the ground behind cover, saying the famous phrase...and was then hit through the eye...flopping dead atop that very sergeant.

I was making a poll. Get the Ambrose E. joke? You don't want to know how long that took me to think up.

Oliver Howard was the commander of the Union XI Corps at the Battle of Chancellorsville (they were the only part of the line that did not dig in, and they were the flank). It was his Corps that Jackson smashed into and rolled up the Federal Line.

Sounds like Bizzaro-Chamberlain.

Sounds like Bizzaro-Chamberlain.

Except Howard commanded a Corps, not a regiment, and he fell back disorganized after being routed, Chamberlain held his ground on the extreme flank.

Yes. Making Howard the Bizzaro-world version of Chamberlain. Exactly.
