As a Christian, all I can say is, Thank God, it's about time. Good on the Brits for doing the research and bad on the US and all it's capitalistic principles for not getting in on the ground floor of the next big tech boom.

Indeed, but we like to think we have the corner on the market and we're completely missing the boat on this one. Biotech is big and it's just going to keep getting bigger and if we want to secure our place in it's emergence as a viable trading commodity, we'd better get on the ball.

All right, I have nothing against christianity. It has some nice values and principles. Every religion does! But I do have something against the 'institute', being represented by the pope. He - and his catholic bunch - have lost it! How can you be against cloning, against female priests, against abortion, against homosexuality, against... while you're claiming to be a true catholic! A true catholic would be tolerant. These guys still believe in principles that were valuable 20 centuries ago. Times have changed and history will not come back. It's time they realise this...

The Pope should either shut it on cloning. Or stop telling kids about Adam and Eve.

You can clone a female version of yourself. Or a male one if your a woman. And it would be more like masturbating rather then incest.

It wouldn't really be a "version" of yourself unless you had it grow up in the exact same enviroment as you did.

Even then, it wouldn't be an exact version because there's no guarantee that genetic expression would be completely the same the second time around.

A better understanding of the basics of human development with a chance to learn how to short circuit life-threatening or handicapping genetic conditions.

A limitless transplant pool with no risk of rejection or need for someone else to die for an organ or limb to become available as well as a source of clean blood.

cloning is legal in Canada. mainly cuz the issuse has very been taken to parilment until those cult guys in Quebec claimed they did it twice. (they might have out-lawed it since then but I havn't heard anything about that)

Unfortunatly reproductive and therapeutic cloning is outlawd in Germany. And now German Doctors council wants an international law against both forms of cloning. Morons. And they call themselfs doctors. :mad:

I am all for the furtherment of science and technology, and I think cloning should(mostly) be given the green light.

There is one limitation that I think is absolutely necessary, which is a ban on cloning humans to life. (By this I mean a full fledged, living, breathing clone.)
The DNA from the cells of an adult organism that would be used to clone it would already have replicated many times, and lost telomeres from the imperfect process of DNA replication. It would effectively subtract the number of years that the subject has already lived (or the number of replications that have taken place) from the lifespan of the prospective clone, as the DNA starts to degenerate when the strand runs out of telomeres, which can afford to be lost. In layman's terms, the clone would age prematurely.

theoretically you could add one... it wouldn't be a clone anymore though - it'd be a transgenic (plus much harder than regular cloning)

Cloning a female from a male is still valid (that's right you sickos)... you'd have to drop the Y chromesome and double the X though... so that might still be a transgenic - but it'd be all you.

Which brings me to the earlier incest question:
YES, it would definately be incest. whether or not it's incest is defined by how closely related you are to them (with different countries drawing the lines at different places) and you would be 100% related to your clone (rather than 50% for a sibling... or something like that I forget the exact maths... I remember you are more closely related to a siblng than a parent, and one of them is 50% but I don't know which).

i.e. Having sex :fluffle: with your clone would be the equivalent of sleeping with your brother/sister, except that your parents are also brother and sister, and their parents... about 15 generations of that should get you close (but not perfectly) to the level of incest of sleeping with your clone. On the bright side with the cloning only your children will be mutant head-bangers. :headbang:

It'd be pretty cool to see a different sex clone of yourself growing up. I have sometimes wondered what I would have done differently had I been a girl. What would I look like? Would I have liked New Kids on the Block? Would I suck at math, be better at languages and be less logical? Would I be as smart? How big would my breasts have been? (I haven't wondered about half of these. I just thought of them now. Really.)
