We all have our reasons for disliking America. But I want to know what people actually LIKE about America.

Great things about Ameica would take all day to write but I willmake a small contribution. (These may also be good things about other countries too)
Beautiful lands (hopefully we can preserve most of what is left)
The poor are partially taken care of at least and you can sometimes work your way up if you try really hard and are in the right place at the right time.
The US has given the world some great technology. I <3 the internet.
There are places where you can go live in seclussion (mostly) and not have to really be a part of society.
The US is sort of a democracy so we can shape our future a bit better than some others.
The US is close to Canada. Obviously a good thing in case a draft comes around :D

A great thing about America. Let's see. How about the fact that you can speak your mind, for example in a thread like this, without having your tongue cut out by the government. That's a definate plus. I love free speech.
Regardless of everything that's happened recently, it is still a country founded on all people having freedom and outlining what people cannot do, rather than being based on tyranny and outlining what people can do.

You'd think that, but there's always some form of censorship around. If you voice your opinion loudly enough, someone will find you and beat you with a stick.
Well, we Canadians have a free trade relationship with the USA. We provide eachother with plenty of wealth, which I suppose is a good thing. We also get entertainment from one another. Our comedians go South for fame and fortune, and bring back jokes about America. (Some jokes, such as Conan the Governor of California, just write themselves.) Money and entertainment: and we thought NAFTA was a bad idea? (And they can keep William Shatner. I don't think we.................................................................................................. ................... want him back.)

All good points. Freedom. It is human nature to all want freedom, and that helped "kick-off" our country and beliefs. :)

I voice my opinnion constantly, and in all different circumstances, and I have never been beaten with a stick, metaphorically or otherwise. Well, actually, the only people who ever give me grief about my oppinions are people of the 'liberal' persuasion who are around when I am having a conversation (not with them, mind you. A private discussion.). They are often quite rude and abrasive, and so I am forced to tell them to mind their own business. Also, I think you are paranoid.

Yes, people can be rude to you when you try to voice your opinion, but we have to remember that it is their right to. It is also your right to ignore them. :)

Exactly. I simply get annoyed at the hostility nowadays for people who hold different oppinions. I have perfect respect for anyone who uses their right to speak freely, but that respect vanishes when one turns violent or resorts to insults. I have little patience for those tactics.

Let me think about that for a minute. I think it could be because I live here.
Other nice things about America: Exchange rate is alright for the time being... Well, higher than it's been at some points. ($1 Can= approx 0.75 American. This is actually pretty good.) You don't trade with Cuba, so there's very little competition of Canadian companies who decide to trade there. (You also (censored) Cubans, but I'll stick with the POSITIVE. :D )
Freedom's nice too, but everyone knows you have it. We have it too (except we have not Patriot Act), as does most of Europe, Australia, and several countries I'm ignoring. What I'm trying to say is, America's not the only free country in the world, so I'd prefer to focus on those particular things that are good about America and distinct about it as well. Good economy, free speech, and democracy describe numerous nations. I dunno. My argument seems clear and unbiased to me, and... hey, I'm exercising that free speech thing. Crazy, eh?

I think you interpreted this wrong; I don't mean in a Big Brother Nineteen Eighty-Four style, where there are video screens everywhere. I mean, simply, the government doesn't want you saying some things, and if you release these things publically and get them to know about it, they'll do something about it. But hey, they don't have the power to censor everything.
Remember that they can't censor everything. The government does not have total control over you. Remember this. Forget anything else you may have heard. Forget you forgot that.
Joking. But seriously, even in Canada, I can't always say everything. I can say a lot, but not everything. Particularly in school, where, before, I have been denied of making certain jokes just because they sound offensive, even if this wasn't intentional; I remember one case where everyone thought I was a homicidal lunatic and my teacher made sure that what I said wouldn't get out (I'm not kidding).
I'm sure that there are plenty of good things about America, but I have never been there before. Certainly, some of the things people say wrong about America are definitely opinions that are easily contradicted by, simply, the opinion of an American.

I like the USA cos it's almost exactly as my home country. Well, except for the social benefits we enjoy... ok... but the general idea is the same: you can do what ever you want if it doesn't violate other people's freedoms.
What comes to your foreign policy so many people here seem to detest, I'm sure we would act like you too, if only we had more than 5 million people and your resources.
After saying all that crap, I don't like USA any more or less than any other country I can relate to. Nations, as people, are never altruistic. Why should i expect more of the USA than of myself.
What comes to americans... I guess you are good at making or spending money... both are good in order to make the economy roll. As a music nut, I have very little to complain about (just keep britney at bay!), you and the brits rule.
As a culinarist, I think Europe rules, but whipped cream in a can is a blast... (don't worry, you rule in weapons manufacturing!)
As I have said before, the relationship between Europeans and Americans is like that of two retarded brothers... the younger one somehow grew bigger, and the older one is a bit anxious if he can control his strength. Both of them are possible threaths to their surroundings.

We have our own reasons to hate one another and to hate other countries, but we should not let propaganda or lies determine our thinking. A group that hates America will spread lies and half truths to get people to join their group. Allwys make sure you are making the choices you can live with or die foe.

Countries are like sport teams. Of course your going to say good things about your home team, of course your going to say what makes another team bad, and everyone hates the team that has the most money to buy the top players and wins most of the games. If you keep winning you must be doing something right.
What I like about America:
no other country has ever in world history given soo much aid to other countries, yes even europe... reminder that America has released billions of dollars of debts that europe has owed united states after helping europe rebuild, after all europe already has suffered soo much already.
I would not be alive today if the americans have not saved the lives of my mother and family from the japanese in her village in ww2. Thankyou!
other great things: pc's, software, internet, aviation, medicine, space exploration(first man on the moon, International space station, space shuttle, hubble, etc), music(rock, rap, country), ocean exploration, the phone, the cell phone, tv, movies, submarine, first metal ships, rocketry, etc, etc
I guess I can go on forever.
What makes America really great is that it is made by europeans, asians, africans, natives, south americans. It may not be perfect, and yeah what country is, but hell its here to stay, and I'm glad its here!

I don't judge anyone by their religion/country/skin colour, but on their individual merits.
If I get bit by a Rottweiller,I don't go: "All Rottweillers will bite me,given the chance.I hate them"
Anyway,
Things I love about america-Too many to list.I might come back to that.
Things I hate-Junk food,fast food,McDonalds,KFC,etc,
The poor are partially taken care of at least and you can sometimes work your way up if you try really hard and are in the right place at the right time.
Don't get me wrong, I like a lot of American things. But I'm afraid, I can't agree with this statement. 22,4% of children in the USA grow up below the poverty line because there is little or no state support, but the media hardly ever report this. Compare this to poverty levels in Scandinavia (eg Finland 4,4%, Sweden 2,6%) and France (7,9%)for example, and there is a huge gap.
That's just children, there are many adults living in poverty as well.

If you combine the countries of the EU, the amount of aid they donate is a lot more than the USA.
As a percentage of GNP, the USA's aid is the smallest of any industrialised country in the world.

If i think hard about what i like about the US and try to find out what is specific to them there are only a few things. Free speech, liberty etc can be found in other places as well. What comes up are a few internet mates that are really cool, various movies (Kevin Smith, Tarantino and the Coen Brothers...), technological advances and, for my part the most important, roleplaying games (pen and Paper, mind you).

I love America.
I love the fact that I can walk down the street and know that there's no danger of being scooped up by government patrols because my thesis research pokes into touchy subjects or something I said on the news took a cheap shot at our foreign policy.
I love that I can walk into a Starbucks and get the same, decent, inexpensive espresso anywhere in the country.
I love that my grocery stores are overflowing with food, most of which I'll never choose to eat.
I love that I can choose what I eat.
I love that I can buy a carton of a cigarettes for $20 and not have a HUGE black label telling me its going to kill me.
I love America because I CAN carry a pistol, rifle, assault rifle or shotgun, I love that its my right to do so.
I love that we can elect a horrificly unpopular president without violence and bloodshed.
But most of all I love one thing about America.
I love that America looks out for America, to hell with anyone else.

for real...as an american I'd like to say the american government can go to hell. This country was brutally stolen from native americans through genocide and imperialistic agression - it still denies many fundamental human rights to it's citizens, has the largest prison population in the world, and through it's elitest bigotry is throwing out the values that made it "great" (if it ever was), take the whole hispanic immegration argument...it's obvious the values that were good for the country are dying out - and all the evils are still as strong as ever. I am ashamed and disgusted to call myself an american citizen.

Being English I like the fact that I can travel to the other side of the world and hear people speaking the same language as me. Also I like that Americans are so friendly and helpful. Its easy to go to America for a week and come back with twice as many friends as you had a week before.
