Pwned!!

Okie ... someone explain to me just what the hell "pwned" is, other than a typo for "owned" ...

It's impossible in the English language to pronounce "pwned" and I imagine it stemmed from some idiot moving their finger slightly to the right when trying to type "owned" and some 10 year old let it propogate throughout the internet ...

I guess my actual question is .... why?

Meh ... that drivel has been around since the ANSI wars in the 80s ... "pwned" seems fairly new.

You can pronounce it 'pawned' :D

It is a misspelling of owned, but it's a DELIBERATE misspelling. I believe it originated by using it to insult newbies who couldn't type very well, and thus when trying to say owned typed pwned instead... at least that's what I heard.

So yeah, it's internet slang.

I need a life.

I always said it as 'pooned' (*wonders for a moment whether admitting to pronouncing it out loud is something to be ashamed of and then is distracted by something shiny*) but that's probably the Welsh influence. I'd use it as a more emphatic or more self-concious form of 'owned'.

I used to run a few BBSes back in the 80s and early 90s ... blinding 2400 baud ... and whenever people started speaking like that, I'd kick them off and block their numbers. (Yeah, there was a time when it was all dial-up)

n00b? Please. I built my first computer using 2x4s, hardwire, a keypunch reader, C-Mos chips and the processor from a traffic signal when your mama was deciding whether to let you happen or just swallow. :p

Lets see. The last part of your name is "Valia" your from North texas and you ran oldschool BBs's

You wouldnt happen to be affiliated with the CDC wouldja?

Basicially pwned is just a mispelling. But its come to mean a harder owning than just owned. Some people pronounce it Pawned, I pronounce it "owned!, Owned with a P billy YEH!!!" But ultimately its not supposed to be pronounced. Its part of a whole culture that has arisen around the written word rather than the spoken.

Some people in this world arent part of the other, their only link being their hardline. Case in point THE EVERQUeST NERDS! God, such a tragic case.

You write words and you hear them in your head. Thats the communication. Its a bastardisation of Face to face contact. Thats why you hear them in your head, and thats why people write so weird and mispell on messageboards.

I remember it well. Co-sysop of a local BBS here (VirtualBBS software) and life-member of another one (Wildcat software).

Zmodem forever!

The dead cow people? Yep, heard of them, never much attention to them. They're Lubbock, though ... I did my time in Houston (SE Texas) and where I am now is east of Dallas.

Didn't affiliate with any of the tens of thousands of TX BBS groups - well, I take that back, I did some work with Media One (Pope P N's thing) and Helix in Houston, but nothing really all that exciting - too many fat greasy men trying to get laid. *shudder*

I still hate that "31337 hax0r" crap, though. :mp5: :mp5:

Pnwed's been around since the 80s, at least, as I remember it... I know a lot of kids today think it's just cooler to say "I owned you, or you got owned." I just laugh, shake my head, and know better.

it's common to all online games at this point, at least the multiplayer ones...

basically, if you could say "owned", and are disinclined to say "0wn3d" for fear of sounding like a retarded 12 year old on too much ritalin, say "pwned" instead!
