Terror Alert? Or Decision Alert?
On Sunday, Secretary of Homeland Security, Tom Ridge, changed the terror alert status from Yellow to Orange in parts of north New Jersey, New York City, and Washington DC. This made me ask myself the question: how soon will it be before the White House makes another important decision? Granted, I am a little liberal, so there is no doubt I would be skeptical of the Department of Homeland Security's Terror Alert Warnings, but I am going to try convincing even the most conservative of all the Republicans that this system is a sham.
The first question I have to ask is this: what happens if no terror strike happens in the specified areas? Does it mean our increased terror status worked? No, not necessarily. If nothing happens, it could mean one of two things. First, it could mean that there never was a threat and this terror alert chart is Bush's friendlier form of terrorism. By striking fear into America, Americans are reminded of September 11th, when Bush's approval ratings were well over 70 percent. It used to serve as a ratings bump, but when the Democrats do not even get a bump from their national convention, surely some boy crying wolf will not effect anything. Although, it doesn't have to mean that the terror alert chart is a sham. The second possibility is that we struck fear in the terrorists. Since we made it so public that we were bumping up security and knew exactly where they were going, they decided to stay home. Not much you can do for Allah when you are sitting in Guantanamo Bay now is there?
The second part of the previous paragraph leads me into my next point. Why exactly are we making our change in security so public? Does anyone feel safe with terrorists roaming around our country? I surely do not. If we just sat back and did not have our sissy little terror alert chart, the terrorists would not expect that we were expecting them. Not only would their plans be foiled, but we would also have them in custody so he can not find a new target and can possibly lead us to other terrorists in the country.
Now I am to the scary part of the terror alert chart. What if this is actually a legitimate system and the terrorists, for some unearthly reason, do not watch CNN to find out how well they are being watched? What happens if they try pulling off their terror attacks and we have an incident in America just like what is going on in the streets of Baghdad every single day? You know what happens? I think I do. The Democrats come out saying "See, we told you so. You should have acted on the findings of the 9/11 Commission ASAP."
Anyway, it would be really scary if there was a terror strike in our country, especially with all the supposed reforms George W. Bush has made with our intelligence agencies. If you are a motivated type of person, email your Senators and your congressman asking them to get back to Washington and get to work on the 9/11 Commission's reports as soon as possible.
