So John Kerry came through my town last night (Flagstaff, AZ) and my older sister, being the political activist that she is, dragged me to the rally downtown. Kerry was supposed to come into town on a train at about 9 pm, but he actually didn't show up until 11 (which was convenient as we decided to hit the bar until he actually showed up).
Now, I'll tell you, he is actually a LOT handsomer in person than on TV. You always see him all saggy, but he's really not that bad, but he really did need a shave. Or maybe it was the tequila shots I had in me. Anyway...
There were about 10,000 people that showed up, but the organizers of the thing only expected about 1000. We were all crammed in together, listening raptly to his speech. He talked about his community service plan, in which every high school graduate will have the option of doing two years' community service for a four-year scholarship to an in-state college. Now, personally, I think it's a pretty good idea, but I'm not sure how he's going to pull it off.
He also talked about bringing back overseas jobs to the U.S., repairing foreign relations, balancing the budget, giving health insurance to Native American tribes, all those good things. I guess I was excited to see a potential president of my country in person and I felt good that I wasn't one of those apathetic college students you always see milling around. I've volunteered for the Democratic party now, something which I thought I would never EVER do, but I feel good about doing it. I suggest that other people volunteer, too, no matter what party you're affiliated with.
Ok, done rambling now. :p
