Dead: Bill Hicks.

Alive: Probably Eddie Izzard, but as a whole I prefer American stand-up (stand up is one of the best things about American culture IMO). But I also really like Denis Leary.

George Carlin followed very closely by Bill Cosby. I can quote great swaths of both of their classic routines.

I'm surprised a few people said Bill Engvall, I didn't know that anyone on this website liked redneck comedians. I have to add Ron White, Jeff Foxworthy, and Bill Engvall of the Blue Collar Comedy Tour to my list. Larry the Cable Guy depends on "fart" humor to much for my liking.

Bill Engvall is the best 'southern' comedian I ever heard. Light-years better than Foxworthy. I like Larry. He's silly. :)

I can't believe no-one's said Robin Williams - Has anyone seen him live? He is without a doubt the funniest man on the planet (& that's Billy Connolley's opinion as well, not just mine).
I wish he'd do more tours.
Also it's a crime against humanity what Hollywood does with him, appearing in child-friendly trash like Mrs. Doubtfire or trying to make him a psycho like One Hour Photo.
What is with Holloywood? They can't seem to grasp the idea that you can have comedy that isn't 'family' or isn't 'romantic'.
Another top one is Billy Connelly, but I think he's been in cruise-mode the last few years.
Bill Hicks, definitely.
Billy T James.

Steven Wright

"It's hard for me to buy clothes for myself. I'm not my size...I take extra-medium"

"Sponges grow in the ocean--that kills me. How much deeper would the ocean be..."

More Steven Wright-
"I put instant coffee in the microwave and almost went back in time"

"I saw a poster that said:'Lost-$50,Reward-$50,if found,just keep it"

"You can't have everything............where would you keep it?"

"My grandfather used to make me stand opposite him while he stared at me,saying nothing........he said it was elevator practice"

Has to be Billy Connolly - He's the only stand-up comedian I've ever known who can perform back to back shows without mentioning any material from the first in his second - pure genius. He could stand up in front of any audience anywher in the world and make peple laugh & he's one of the very few to e popular both sides of the Atlantic.

Bill Hicks is also V good - get's a bit boring after a while though seems to hang around on the same subjects for too long.

Stephen Lynch, special olympics-

Watch them run, watch them fall, watch them try to catch a ball. olympics... special olympics. Watch them laugh, watch them drool, watch them fall into a pool, thats diving, at the special olympics.
And I know full well, that I will burn in hell, but-those-guys-playing-wheelchair-basketball-gotta-be-the-funniest-frickin-thing-i've-ever-seen-in-my-life at the special olympics.

Bill Engvall- here's you sign are funny as hell too

I was on a corporate flight. It was a morning show so I had to fly by night over to this little remote town in this puddle jumper airplane. The airplane hit a deer, I can't make this up, and it wrecked the engine. But the plane was so small there were no slides, the flight attendances just said "step out". So they bus us back to the airport and I call my wife, I go "honey you won't believe what happened, we just hit a deer with our airplane" There was a pause. Then she goes "omg, were you on the ground?" I go no, "I was in the air, Santa was making one last flight... here's your sign." - Bill Engvall

The rest of the blue collar comedians are funny too.. but i think i've wasted too much space on this thread already... so i'll just end now
