Why is the republican party known as the GOP? I would personally shorten my party name to something that in some way resembled the full version.

It means grand old party. Its what the republicans called themselves for a while because they were the older of the two major parties that we now have today.

And yes, that was a dumb question

GOP = Grand Ole Party

There's a story behind it, which can be found at www.gop.com or by googling "GOP"

Wait. I thought the democrats were older. The NAME Republicans is older, but that's because the republicans of the past became the democratic party.

Abraham Lincoln was the first Republican President. But I was sure there was a Democratic party before then.

Ummm ... before you go callin' someone else dumb, it might be wise to know that Thomas Jefferson founded the Democratic Party in 1792 ... it's way older than the GOP.

In 1848, before Lincoln, the National Convention established the Democratic National Committee, now the longest running political organization in the world.

Keep in mind, during that time, the Democrats were modern republicans and vice versa, so when the names switched, the 'new' republicans used that name to indicate their historic roots.
