"so says i," the shins: brilliant lyrics, catchy tune, the shins are just about one of the best bands going.

Listen, when I went to school in the 70's and early 80's you couldn't go to a dance where Stairway to Heaven wasn't the last song at EVERY dance. I too use to like it, till they beat it to death. They have a habit of doing that to good music. That's why I hate it now.

Same as I like Dire Straits, but if I ever hear "Money For Nothing" again, it will be too soon.

Hey, don't get me wrong, I love Zeppelin, have just about every thing they ever did. However I don't believe Stairway to Heaven was their best song and as said, it got played to death. So now I turn it if it comes on the radio, or skip over it if I'm listening to Zeppelin.

I was not alive when Stairway was being played to death, so I still have the ability to enjoy it for what it is: The greatest fucking song this planet has ever seen!

really though, you cannot go wrong with Led, anything off of Led Zeppelin IV kicked ass.

Also some of my Led Zeppelin favorites:
When the Levee Breaks
The Battle of Evermore
Gallows Pole
Custard Pie
Dazed and Confused
Whole Lotta Love
Kashmir
All of My Love
and the list could go on for eternity.

Just makes me feel uneasy.

But my current, hip, new, funky, favorite song? 'Idioteque' Radiohead (hell, anything by Radiohead is amazing). And 'I will Survive' the cover by Cake.

You're completely wrong. That view of rock, that it has to 'sound cool' is what is killing it. Rock has to express emotion, and has to be played well. The musicians have to have 'talent,' something no one understands anymore. it doesn't have to be complex, but Stairway and Led Zeppelin were complex, and that's what make them great.

I'll agree that the last two minutes are the best, but it's because the whole song builds up to the famous, furious guitar solo, and the amazing riffing in the last verse. It builds from a finger picked guitar line, and gradually gets more complex, and ends up right where it started.

Jackson Browne actually wrote "Take It Easy" David Lindley played a mean slide guitar. Don Henley kept asking if Jackson wanted them to finish it, Jackson kept saying no, in the end he let them finish it and call it their own. Jackson felt that they would do more justice to the song because of the bank of voices. The rest is history. They all hung out together as young dudes, Jackson was the first to get a record deal, the Eagles actually came after him.. but my favorite song by Jackson Browne is easily "Lives in the Balance"

Final thought: Stairway to Heaven can never be beaten, no matter how hard you try.

Final Thought: I strongly disagree, but let's jsut leave it there, because there's no point is complaining to each other how much our music sucks...COLDPLAY! YAYAYAYAYAYA!

For some reason that song's lyrics remind me of Jethro Tull..who I also love!

A man with taste! have you heard the covers of that by Cradle of Filth and Children of Bodom? They are SHWEET!
Haven't the Children of Bodom cover...
And apart from the "motherfucker" they added to the lyrics, the Cradle of Filth one offers a unique perspective.

Yeah I've also heard the Iced Earth cover of Hallowed Be Thy Name.... also pretty good.

However no cover has ever come close to the original... as far as bands covering Maiden go...

Too true. If the CoB lyrics were...ummm...understandable...it would have been close. But I agree. the original is SUPREME!

Personally, I don't understand why every time there's a topic resembling this one on the forum the same type of people start a discussion about who's favourite band is better, who sucks, and why their opinion is the most valid one. And it's always about either heavy metal or hard rock. People who like, for instance, Coldplay are beign laughed at. I think that the most catchy tunes out there are probably the ones from the eighties. Some of those song are almost impossible to get out of your heads, like Girs Just Wanna Have Fun by Cindy Lauper or Like A Virgin by Madonna. I mean, they are trite and tacky and so on, but are a lot catchier than, let's say, Wish You Were Here. And another thing - stating that Stairway To Heaven is you favourite song of all time is a bit lame because that song is a classic, just like Wish You Were Here or Bohemian Rhapsody, etc... Try to be more original. My favourites right about now are Leonard Cohen's Famous Blue Raincoat from Songs Of Love And Hate and Tom Wats's I Hope That I Don't Fall In Love With You from Closing Time. Also, I am a huge fan of Nick Cave and R.E.M., but I don't have time to list not even a small fraction of my favourite songs right now.

Jackson Browne: Rock me on the Water, Doctor My Eyes, Jamaica Say You Will, Under the Falling Sky (great bongos), Late for the Sky, The Late Show, Before the Deluge, The Road, The Load Out/Stay, The Pretender, and Here Come Those Tears Again. All excellent. I don't like the original version of Take It Easy. I prefer the Eagle's version.

Glenn Frey lived in the apartment above Browne's in California. He heard him working on Jamaica Say You Will, and went down to listen, and that's when they met. Frey actually wrote the famous "Standin on a corner in Winslow Arizona" verse of Take It Easy, and Jackson gave him credit as co-writer. All of those California rockers of the seventies pretty much knew each other.

I can't pick just one.. but my two favorite bands are

#1 Pink Floyd

#2 The Beatles (But only from Sgt Peppers Loney Hearts Club Band on, not their really early stuff) )

Pink Floyd I can agree with, but I think the Beatles are way overhyped. For example, Rolling Stone magazine recently came out with a list of the 500 greatest albums of all time (http://www.rockonthenet.com/archive/2003/rs500albums1.htm)... and four of the top ten were by the Beatles. While I won't deny that they were very talented, I think that's a bit too much. Especially since, IMHO, The Wall, Final Cut, and Momentary Lapse of Reason beat any Beatles album.

For pure eccentricity, I don't think anything beats Pink Floyd's "Several Species Of Small Furry Animals Gathered Together In A Cave And Grooving With A Pict". I can't think of a song that even comes close.
But my favorite song of all time has to be Louis Armstrong's "What a Wonderful World".

the song that gets stuck in my head is that damn "milkshake" by kelis. i don't even like hip hop, damnit.

Gah! Just seeing it in print gets it stuck my head, it's SO catchy. Even though I hate it, and I only know it from the radio and my one friend.

My favorite song changes a lot, but right now it's "Zombie" by the Cranberries. But there's so much good stuff out there.
