Rumor has it that should Bush be re-elected, the draft will be re-instated (or he'll try getting it re-instated) by June 15, 2005.

I wish they wouldn't have changed the law about being in college...
Now if you're drafted and in college, you only have time to finished the current semester and then you get shipped out.

Heh. I heard the exact same thing months ago... A US General, about the time of 9/11, said that America would not need the draft, unless our forces were spread out all over the world...precisely what Bush has done...

I'm fortunate enough not to qualify. (I'm so out of shape I'd be 4F), plus I take antidepressants.

But if Bush does reinstate the draft, my response shall be:

Is there a vision requirement for the draft? (Err, I think I'm damn close to being legally blind)

Yep, there's a vision requirement. Since I, too, have horrific eyesight, that's another reason I'd be rejected.

there is no point to having a draft first of all as recruitmant goals are being met constantly since president bush took office. he does not support a draft. nobody in his administration wants a draft.it would be illogical since over the next few years our troop deployment is projected to decrease. also, to put a draft in effect it requires a bill which is passed by congress and the senate. any one who follows politics as close as i do knows that even if a bill were evn submited ( unlikely) it would probably fail to even get half of the "war hawks" behind it. it would not even make its way through committee never mind to the presidents desk. nobody wants it. nobody needs it. why are we talking about it? its just another rumor to drum up peoples fears. shame on the people who spread it.

Well, that, and I imagine the modern US military would be pretty upset at being saddled with and having to train several million conscripts who:

a) don't want to be there and probably won't fight for anything, and
b) need extensive training even to be cannon fodder, given the complexity of the equipment and the like these days.

Eh, that rumor's been around since 9/11.
