Has NS got better or worse in the time you've been here?

Couldn't be simpler really. Has NS got better or worse in the time you've been here? Are you nostalgic for the old days?

Personally, I say worse.

I haven't been here since the "good ol' days," so my first NS memories are of a dying server and thousands of forum errors. I was never around to see such colorful characters as Parratoga, Nod, etc. in their prime, and hence NS seems to be better today than when I joined.

Hehe, Parratoga.

Decline.

I hardly ever see any party threads any more. Just a bunch of uptight bickering with a few parodies thrown in the mix. :(

I really haven't been around long enough to say (I joined May 1, 2004).

I think it's gotten better. While the servers wern't as good as they are now, I never really experienced the massive forum errors. It would happen, but it wasn't too bad for me. I too have not been around long enough to see the nationstate's legends, but I have been able to see the rise and fall of serveral excellent players, annoying trolls, and just plain idiots (Michael Jackson and co)

Worse.
I saw the end of the old server when the best-of-the-best left leaving the worse-of-the-best.

Well, this is kind of expected from me, but I think that the UN has become frighteningly powerful and is not respecting nations rights. That's just an opinion though.

I'm still learning though, we'll see.

Worse. I liked the old forum set up and colors, and new people used to come on all the time, and everyone would bash them, and they would eventually get deated. Now every thread is about Bush and Kerry, abortion, morals, and religion. Nothing is fun anymore. :( :( :(

I am nostalgic about the past, and I prefer the old people and the old atmosphere. If only the speed of these forums plus all the old stuff, that would be perfect.

Well, the players of the game have gotten worse, as they continue to fill up the boards with flames and repeat threads.

As for the game, well, I say it stayed the same.

I suppose a combination. The players are not as good as they were when I joined, which wasn't that long ago, really. The nostalgia of first time NSing has worn off, but in turn learning to rp better, and finding new players is always entertaining.

Both!

It's better because the server is faster and we don't seem to have as many idiot spammers as before.

It's worse because the server is faster because I use to wait and read what I was going to post while waiting to post and put more thought into what I posted because I didn't know when I'd get to post again..lol So, I feel the quality of my posts have went down cause it's to easy to post a knee jerk reaction now.

Worse. I remember June 10 2003 when I firs' join, I were just a li'l 5-mil population nation and lemme tell ye...
[/old geezer routine]

But I'm still somewhat serious. The actual game is a bit better, but the General forum is so much worse. I liked the phpBB better. There were more interesting people. There was a better variety of threads. Word play wasn't classified as spam. Anything but politics dies now. We need a separate IRL politics forum, in my opinion. I used to complain about the Volcano when it existed, but now I wish it was still open. There used to be worshipping threads to various forumgoers - I remember I started one for LG, and Silver would get a lot of them. I came along when there were no page limits on threads, so that the "Last person posting here wins" thread was completely ridiculous. Once the 65-page cap came along, there were lots of sequels. I miss the Word Association thread. People could talk about media without talking about politics. And god knows you don't see any Nazis on the forums anymore. Parratoga was so funny!

*sigh* There's even more, but that's the gist.

NS - the actual game - always was and still is a rather sad simulation. It was interesting in the beginning but soon became repetitive - the same issues over and over etc.

As for the forum, one good thing is that fewer people are here now than in the old days. The move to jolt, completely mismanaged as it was, in typical NS fashion, must have resulted in a lot of people simply giving up. Seeing as most of the people who post in the forums are mindless left-wing types, that has to be a good thing... :)

I think there is a lack of comradarie that the old forum members had, there seems a lot less friendships and much less joking around. I've not noticed a difference from May 2003 when I joined to now August 2004 in flaming and bashing. I've seen at least three generations of controversial posters and bashers, from Fascist White States to Gigatron. Outside the General forum I've noticed an annoying tendency of people to make threads asking people what they think about them.

I remember Parratoga, Mezzaluna, and Eridanus (come to think of it, I don't remember him leaving, but his ozzy sig always drew my attention in any thread), along with a myriad of others who have disappeared, Philandra (I think that was the name, memory is getting bad in my old age) was just before my time, but I certainly heard enough about that.

Parratoga was supposed to have committed suicide - "real world" suicide - so it's not really surprising she isn't around any more.

I don't know if her old region "Ascendancy" is still in existence but there were, as of a few months ago, a couple of people there who can tell you about why she did what she did.

Including puppets, I have probably been thru about 10 countries since I joined in March 2003. That was right about the time of the Iraqi War, so the debate on both sides was awesome. I would say that I joined at the "peak" of NationStates. With the exception of a few rare moments, I would have to say that NationStates has gotten worse since I have joined.

This is a baseless rumor. There is no evidence to back it up. I caution people to not fall for it. Her and Seth had a falling out and then it was Seth who floated the rumor that she killed herself. All I'm saying is I'd take it with a grain of salt.

Pros:
Forums are faster and don't crash all the damn time
The main site is faster
New issues seem to come along more regularly
The ability to give your nation whatever title you want(all my nations still have the titles from the you-have-to-choose-one-from-a-preset-list days, though :P )

Cons:
The loss of being able to log in from one nation to another without logging out first.(I liked that feature, seeing as I have my main nation and 6 puppet nations to deal with.)
Topics in General either die out quickly or are about politics of contriversal debates

When I started playing this game, I had no worries whatsoever. I created my region, and logged in once a day, just to do issues. Right now I play the game much more intensively, but I have much bigger chance to be deleted. This game is getting more difficult by the day. I used to know what "griefing" and "spamming" was, but now I am completely lost, and can only hope not to brake rules :(

Yes, I long back to the old days, when I had a region of 6 nations, and no worries whatsoever.

Can not agree more, I had a nation with +1000 posts but the huge server problems made that you double posted for perhaps 2 pages sometimes. That is the reason while some nations got det.Mine was to while I was deleting the double posts when it hapened(could take 30 min. or was sometimes completely impossible with that shit server).

This is much better. As long as it lasts. If speeds slows down I out of here again.

I'd say its gotten a bit better but much could still be done the major switch was no big deal the forums are better for sure and the game itself is about the same really but that will change when and if we get NS2 with its improved UN and foreign stuff like war, alliances trade etc. which really is being done by many of us anyway. I myself would like to have more issues to vote on and be able to vote on old issues I've changed my mind on.

Both.

Better:
-Faster Forums
-Less Spam

Worse:
-More newbies (Are they just coming from the rest of Jolt?)
-Nothing but political discussions in General

I was unfortunate enough to join too late to see the legends of the old forum, (Oh how I wish I had gotten to see the legendary 'Amerigan Civil War') so I can't say anything about the change in amount of greater players, but only the the average ones like me. Basically, few of the good and average posters seem to have left since I joined, but unfortunately more newbies have joined, so overall the quality of RP and discussion seems to have lowered.

Still, at least we have the faster forums, eh? :D

The faster forums bit: when I started, not only did the forums run at a fine speed, but there were also decent threads and the pace at which threads moved down the boards seemed much more reasonable. I used to read 15+ pages of debates and RPs before making a comment, so the forum speed can't have been that bad.
