Daylight Savings

Okay, a few questions about Daylight Savings...

1) Does anyone else feel like Arizona (and one other state) are the best two states in the country since they don't do DLS?

2) Why do we still do DLS?

3) Does anyone else hate DLS?

4) Do Europeans or any other non-Americans do DLS?

--I also think that there would be absolutely no need for DLS is we fixed our clocks to count 23 hours, 59 minutes and 13 seconds instead of 24 hours.

Living in AZ isn't as neat as you might think... all of a sudden BAM! All the TV shows come on an hour later... and then BAM! They all come on one hour early...

Heh...I didn't think about that...but that could be changed if the whole nation followed Arizona's wonderful lead.

I think Alaska may be the other state that doesn't do DLS.

I think all European nations do DLS. At least Germany does and it is unlikely that in the EU, we're the only ones doing DLS.. it would be so un-EUish ;)

I'm pretty sure the UK does it. That's the whole "Spring Forward, Fall Back" thing right?

Ah!,you again -
We have DLS in the UK but it is called British Summer Time (BST)
It is to get maximum daylight-As we are quite far from the equator ,in winter it can get dark very suddenly about 4or 5 oclock-It was supposedly started to cut down on Schoolkids getting hit by cars, but personally I think it sucks

If the clocks counted 23 hours, 59 minutes and 13 seconds (the time an actual day is), there'd be less fluctuation in when the sun sets.

Living in Indiana (the other state that doesn't do DST), I personally am happy not to change my clocks. Why?

BECAUSE THE ENTIRE IDEA THAT DST "SAVES TIME" OR "CREATES TIME" is just so STUPID!

*whew* Okay, sorry. But the argument for DST makes no sense. I mean, sure, you have more sunlight when it's 6AM or something, but why not just get up an hour earlier when it's light outside, or an hour later when it's not?

It'd also prevent leap years.

It doesn't save or create time. It "saves" or "creates" daylight and was instituted in order to save candle power.

It was introduced here to give schoolkids more time to get home while it is still (semi) light, but I don't believe that any statistics have shown it to be effective.

DST/BST was introduced in the UK in WW1 by DORA in order to allow people to work longer hours in factories (i think)

Anyway,I agree with you about the clock thing

Hmmm...You may be right -now I think about it,the Schoolkids/road safety thing I mentioned may not be why it was introduced, but is often cited as a reason for not abolishing it.....

You are, it is also why we have licensing hours in pubs too. So factory workers didn't arrive at work hungover/still drunk from the night before, also the government issued instructions to landlords on how to water down beer (a practise I am sure a few still do).

Defense of the Realm Act (DORA) (http://www.spartacus.schoolnet.co.uk/FWWdora.htm)

DORA was also used to control civilian behaviour. This including regulating alcohol consumption and food supplies. In October 1915 the British government announced several measures they believed would reduce alcohol consumption. A No Treating Order laid down that people could not buy alcoholic drinks for other people. Public House opening times were also reduced to 12.00 noon to 2.30 pm and 6.30 to 9.30 pm. Before the law was changed, public houses could open from 5 am in the morning to 12.30 pm at night.

Nice, but I'm sure no one ever got drunk before work.

2)Beats the hell out of me. It's as pointless as cutting off the top half of the blanket and sewing it to the bottom half because your legs are cold.

3)YES!!!!! Here's what I have to say to DLS: :upyours:

Who the hell could remember that? Our clocks would be all screwed up and confusing anyway. Besides, the DSL in the fall/autumn is a good thing, and extra hour of sleep always is. ;)
