If you hear people say "could've" and don't know that they are saying the contraction of "could have" then you might assume they are saying "could of" (depending on the accent). Therefore, you're spelling what you hear.

But it really doesn't matter. There are alot here that doesn't have english as thier native language and some that have might have problems with it even if it is. Shouldn't be picked on.
