Title IX

This is a thread of course, debating wether Title IX is wrong and or sexist.

Title IX in case you don't know, is a law, saying that Womens and Mens college althetic teams have to be equal, equal meaning, having the same equipment, and the same number of players, which for some reason dosn't apply to football apperantly.

This sounds fair right? It isn't, because women don't join some althetic groups, like rafting or hockey often. Because of this they have to attract women to join these, IE free scholarships. For example:

Joe Shmoe is 1 point above what he needs to get a partal scholarship.
Jane Doe is 10 points below what she needs to get a partial.

Jane is offered a FULL scholarship, if she joins hockey.

Joe is left in the dust, as he has to be cut to pay for Jane's equipment.

What I want to know, is weather you think TIX should exist, and if it can, should it be modified?

No. It's just like affirmative action. Reverse racism is still racism. Reverse sexism is still sexism.

Of course, this would go the other way as well. Girls are more likely to be attracted to gymnastics than men. So, if a school has a gymnastics team, a guy would get favored. Joe might be offered a full scholarship, while Jane gets left out because she's paying for him.

Now, since that has been covered - I personally don't think schools should offer "athletic scholarships." Scholarships should be based on the ability to be a scholar. If someone wants to play sports, that's great. But that is personal opinion and will never get implemented at most schools so: moving on.

I think a good alternative to Title IX might be to get rid of the gender thing altogether. Just make all the teams co-ed and let the people who qualify onto the team. Will this possibly exclude some girls? Maybe, but if they are as good as the guys it won't. And there won't be any issues of sex discrimination. Of course, this will never happen at most schools either so: moving on.

Well, I guess that's it.

Didn't I see you in "The American President?"

Title IX?

Has there ever been a case were a guy was booted because of Title IX?

I wouldn't go that far. I think that athletics are a valid part of some people's school experience. And they are important to people who want to play sports pro or want to major in phys ed or phys therapy or something like it. I just don't think schools should have "athletic scholarships," because athletics should not be your primary reason to be there.

Athletic scholarships should be funded by profits from athletic events (tickets, concessions, etc.)

If people don't want to pay to watch boring sports then why should schools pay to keep boring athletes at the school?

I agree with the person that it should all be co-ed. I mean, women always complain they are every bit as good and should be given completely equal chances. Okay, in a co-ed situation, that's exactly what would happen. Complete equality, based on skill and merit alone. If there are more women that are better, there will be more women on the team. If there are more men that are better, there will be more men on the team.

Simply fair.
