The Hypocrisy of the 527s!

Its amazing that Democrats, the people who first started these 527s, breaking McCain/Feingold have the nerve to attack the Republicans for doing the same thing.

They have the nerve to ask Bush to denounce the add done by a Republican 527 when groups like MoveOn gladly have people make adds comparing Bush to Hitler. You have Whoopi Goldberg playing word games with Bush's name.

When did Kerry ever denounce these ads or denounce the tirade by Goldberg? Kerry was onstage through it all and he still didn't stand up for the positive campaign he is supposedly running. I guess the money he was receiving made him think twice about it. Do I expect him to, no, it probably won't happen, but the nerve they have to ask Bush to denounce this ad that raises legitmate questions about Kerry's war service is remarkable.

What are 527s? Is that another way of saying "political action committees?"

527's are a special group, I think they have tax exempt status. Since they are not technically affiliated with any party they can run ads on tv supporting or attacking various candidates. It is essentially a way around the soft money ban set in place by the McCain/Feingold act.

I think there might be a couple of reasons why...

1) Since the Republicans made such a huge fuss about the Democrat 527 groups, and we're not talking just complaints - I mean they tried full-on legal procedings to stop it.... maybe the Democrats are making a point.... "Hey, you said it wasn't okay for us to let ads be made, and now you do the same thing?" Most of the public has probably already forgotten the previous incarnation of this conflict - and this will just serve to keep it fresh... maybe?

2) I think another thing might be that the current campaign advertisments are being made with the sanction of a man who never saw active military service (in fact, they have yet to prove he saw any military service) - and are basically saying that a war-hero is a coward and a sham. I think it's a pretty low blow - he IS a decorated soldier, he did serve, he was commended - to try to undercut that is practically an attack on Kerry's patriotism (in that, he was on the front line, he was willing to fight and die for his country).

That's not to say the 527 thing is bad - but, maybe Bush needs to be a little more choosy about which material he appears to support.

The Republicans denounced moveon ads (and the ads they were so pissed about was sent in by a member and moveon didnt use the ad anyway and most of the members didnt vote for the ad ) and the democrats (as well as republicans) denounced the swift boat ad. whats the problem?

McCain just wanted the Republicans to have a shred of dignity so he called on the Whitehouse to denounce the ad.

One. The ad you link to Moveon was 1)never requested by Moveon--it was submitted as part of a contest and subsequently removed from the website. to say Moveon had people make an ad comparing Bush to Hitler is factually incorrect--in short, it's a lie. 2) In a strange twist, the ad that linked Bush to Hitler was aired in part--by Bush's campaign--so they're hardly in any position to complain about it.

Two. Whoopi Goldberg was not a part of any ad. She was speaking as a citizen--not a particularly funny one in my opinion--but still well within her First Amendment rights as a citizen of the US. Don't like it? Tough. Think it's over the line? Fine--tell the assmunches on your side (read Michael Savage) to stop comparing prominent Democrats to people like Goebbels and we'll tell Whoopi to stop making dumb jokes about Bush's name.
