What does patriotism mean for you?

I've seen this term thrown around a bit on this forum, and here's your chance to declare what you mean by it.

For me, patriotism is just doing whatever you think is good for the country. I believe Bush is a patriot because everything he does is what he thinks is good for the USA. Let me go on and say that I think his policies aren't really for our good, and I think I'm a patriot by electing officials that will push policies that I feel is for our country's well-being. Look, I don't like Bush, but I won't deny his patriotism or downplay mine or anyone else's.

I think the word simply means not intentionally wishing harm on the USA, but instead, supporting it. This doesn't translate into nationalism, for after all, dissent or support is patriotism. It's really a broad term, if you ask me. All it really means is wishing well for the USA and not being apathetic with how the USA is faring.

Patriotism to me means loving the country you've chosen to live in, and to work toward the ideal, always, for everyone. Even if the ideal is impossible, we should always work to make it as close as we can get it. I feel that this means leaving people their personal freedoms.

Patriotism means collectivist submission to the government. You stop regarding yourself as a person and think of yourself as part of the country. It is the first step to and basis of fascism.

I'd say that was nationalism.

In these days, there is no difference- all Patriots are Nationalists or they are UnPatriotic, according to the Administration.

No offence to anyone but Patriotism to me means blinkered Americans and football hooligans.

I don't like how patriotism isn't regarded a vague term that doesn't carry a strong significance. I'm a patriot should mean, "I want to help my country", not "I want to support what my country does and I want to be the opposite of a 'terrorist'".
