Moving to Mars or not?

Imagine colonisation of Mars were possible right now.

Would you sign up for relocation?

Me? I don't know. On the one hand it sounds tempting as it sounds like an adventure, but on the other hand... damn, I'd miss the Earth!!!...

I'd rather go into asteroid mining. An asteroid 1km in diameter has on average 7,500 tons of platinum. And there are a million or more asteroids that size in the belt. And it's just sitting there waiting to be had.

That's enough to have a solid platinum castle!

Every time I got homesick, I'd look around and say "HOLY SHIT! I'm on Mars!"

And then I'd feel better, because how cool is that, to live on Mars.

If they really rebuild mars and give it an Earth-like climate(and i live to see it), why not? The faster i go there, the bigger i can make my garden. "Its a win-win situation"

I would rather live in a giant, highly reinforced bio-dome on the moon. The great feeling of weightlessness on its own makes it worth it.

Citation? Or have you just pulled this figure out of the aether?

To be honest, I think that figure may be somewhat spurious. However, I wouldn't say no to a solid platinum castle.

Apparently, platinum is quite common in the cosmos, but I don't think it'll come floating about in huge castle-sized chunks.

theres no internet connection on mars, and if there were thered be at least 20 minutes of latency. thats serious lag. so i think i'll stay here for now

Yeah, cheers, I found that shortly after my original post (see edit, above). I remain somewhat sceptical about that figure myself. Not my field of expertise.

Yeah, especially after a night out. Imagine throwing up and seeing all that vomit float around your apartment. :D

It has it's advantages; you might be able to clean it up before it hits the carpet.

I'm sure within days of a lunar colony being founded, there'll be an 'authentic' Irish pub (i.e. serves guinness, barman has sideburns) there. Those things get everywhere.

And a place next door that serves a "traditional full english".
