Man's chainsaw tumble kills wife
LONDON, England (Reuters) -- A British man was being treated for shock on Wednesday after he fell from a ladder while pruning trees, accidentally killing his wife with his chainsaw, police said.
The 56-year-old man, who has not been named, was cutting back tree branches at his home in southeast London on Monday when he tumbled backwards from the ladder.
The running chainsaw crashed down onto the neck of his wife, who was working in the garden below him.
"The woman was killed instantly, although she was not decapitated," police said in a statement. "Her husband was taken to hospital. He is still being treated for shock."
A police spokesman said the incident was being treated as a "tragic accident."

Hey....that gives me an idea....where is my ladder....

Well, Scott Peterson will probably walk....and the idiot in Utah might have gotten away with it too if he did not go and buy a new mattress while volunteers were looking for his wife.
they should ban such comments ...

WHy?
I'm puzzled. Do British chainsaws not require the operator to keep a trigger/throttle pulled/pushed to remain running? (a deadman switch at least) It is a basic safety feature on US and Candian chainsaws, take your hand off the throttle and the chainsaw engine quits. I think someone should bring this rather basic concept of safe machine design to the attention of British chainsaw manufacturers who seem to have missed it somehow.

When you fall, your muscles tense up to prepare for impact, so he would have actually squeezed on the trigger instead of let go.
When you fall, your muscles tense up to prepare for impact, so he would have actually squeezed on the trigger instead of let go.Well this is just wrong, when I fall I relax, but I understand some people tense up when they fall. But the impression gained from the way the article is written is that the chainsaw fell seperate from the man, "The running chainsaw crashed down onto the neck of his wife, who was working in the garden below him."
Anyeho this brings up annother question, why was she working in the garden beneath his ladder when he was pruning trees?

Perhaps she was holding the ladder to steady it. Or shaking it to make him fall ... :p

What a shame.

That is also not the impression gained from the piece, note the phrase "who was working in the garden below him". If she was working with him on the pruning then the clause "in the garden" should be removed, there is no need to mention the garden unless it is appropos to her reason for being below him.

It is a very cool and grown up thing to laugh at accidental deaths and lives fucked up beyond all repair, yes or no?

yes, obviously
also, I don't think this would be nearly as easy to fake as you might think. I mean, falling off a ladder, it doesn't seem that you'd be able to control your chainsaw at all..

He totally saw her partially severed head, probably held her body in his arms while her head kinda bent at a weird angle.
That would suck, I'd be in treatment for shock for the rest of my life.
Actually, I also don't understand how that happens. Unless he fell HOLDING the chainsaw, and continued to hold down on the trigger as he fell o.O
