The BBC's Emma Simpson in New York says it took years of political wrangling and millions of dollars of donations to get safety and security up to scratch.
Visitors will be screened once before they board the ferries to Liberty Island and again when they enter the 305-foot (93 metre) statue. The second screening is said to include a device which blows air through clothes as it tests for the presence of explosives particles.
"I think it's significant that, despite the raising of the alert levels, we are still going ahead with the reopening," said US Assistant Interior Secretary Craig Manson. "I think it shows the world that liberty cannot be intimidated."
Oh yeah. They sure as hell arent intimidated. Now.
