I have never visited these new forums until now ... and I was wondering whether it was just me being forgetful, or has the posting rate at these forums gone up dramatically?

Yes, because these new forums are dramatically faster.

The faster server has made it possible for the bored to post in throes.

I have gone from 150 to my current number since the Jolt move.

I know. I've noticed the same thing here.

I think posts might be getting shorter: on the old forum I would always copy and paste my answer into Notepad and tweak away at it, cleaning up a bit here, adding another paragraph there, safe in the knowledge that my first couple of attempts to post would fail, and that the discussion wouldn't have moved on to far in the meantime. Now we can almost have a shouting match in real time, for good or ill.
