Different musical appeals

Yeah, I made the title vague to draw attention. And also because I was just at my little sister's birthday party and the sugar crash is impairing my ability to be succinct/articulate.

Anyway, I've noticed that there are different reasons that I may love a certain musical artist. One is nostalgia - I listened to their music when I was a little kid, or at some other point in my life and I love the rush of reliving the feelings. Another is catchiness - it's just so catchy, but otherwise it's lukewarm; it never wears off, but it's not as great as you'd think from the amount I listen to it. A third is temporary appeal, when songs are great at first because of novelty but soon wear out their welcome (though after I take a break they re-appeal), and a fourth is specific selection when I have some songs I love from a musical artist but the rest I have no interest in. The last category of favoritism, I find, is the true best. The ones that I never stop listening to, and have some favorites from but like everything they put out somewhat. What are some of your "true best" favorites?

Mine would be Elvis Costello, XTC, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. I never get tired of them and I like their entire selection, along with some favorites.

Nirvana, The Smashing Pumpkins, Local H...and many more.

I'll always listen to the Beatles. They really never get old. Same goes for Dylan.

I'm always amazed when I discover I still love the same album after a number of years. This is true of Randy Newman's "Good Old Boys." I remember wondering if I would still be as crazy years from now, and I still am.

But I also went through a Led Zeppelin phase. I would listen to them everyday, just loved them. Then one day I noticed I hadn't listen to them in a couple of months. Nothing happened really, I just got tired of them. Don't get me wrong, they still rock harder than anybody...

And here's a question for you all: did you go through a Doors phase in high school? I swear, everybody I know just loved them their senior year of high school, now, years later, they just don't get the appeal.

No, I can't say that I've ever really really liked the Doors, but I've only heard a few of their songs. It seems, however, that you might be a little bit older than I am, and would be more apt to experiencing them in their prime.

When I listen to Nirvana and the Postal Service (to name a couple), theres just something about the music that I just can't place that just makes it incredible for me, especially "such great heigts" by PS, and pretty much any nirvana song.

Oh, that sucks, (in the bad way). Are there any bands that are big in the UK that most people in the US haven't heard of? I'm always interested in listening to new music.

the best I'd suggest would be Muse.... but think they've just done a tour in North America to promote their latest album...
um... there's also a small up-cominh band over here called Antihero (www.antihero.org.uk)... I randomly found myself on their mailing list few yrs back... managed to get to gig to check them out and was pleased I didnt just ignore them... so am doing my bit to promote them!

Muse are great from what i've heard. I highly recommend the song "Stockholm Syndrome". Oh yeah, and Everclear are cool.

Jello, check out Spiderbait. Judging by other bands you like, I think you'd get into them.

I want to suggest a coupla other bands, but they're both American...
found My Morning Jacket about a yr ago.. seen them live twice over here, it's an AMAZING live show... nothing like u'd expect from the albums
and also Guster...my bf introduced their music to me coupla months ago and I'm debating spending the insane ammount of money we're asked to spend on their albums to buy them over here, or just wait to I go visit my bf in Toronoto in Sept...
