Hardware screwup

Anybody who can help, I'd greatly appreciate it. Of late, I've been unable to use my secondary CD-RW drive. Every time I attempt to access it it says:

"H:\ Is not accessible. The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error."

Having read up on this it would appear that there's some screw-up in the interrupts somewhere; the drive doesn't have a conflicting SCSI ID with anything as far as I know, all the leads are fine, and the driver's the latest one available.

My system:

OS: Win2k w/latest Service Pack (4, I think)

1 GHz PIII
TNT2 video card (ancient!)
Primary HD: 80Gb Fujitsu MPB 3064
Slave HD: 6Gb IC35L080, manufacturer unknown
CD-R Drive: Matshita CR-586
CR-RW Drive: Samsung SW-408B

Any help greatly appreciated.

Didn't read all of post yet, but here are some initial checks you need to run.

If it is a secondary CD drive and they're on they same wire, make sure one is set to master and one to slave.

If it is the only CD drive, make sure it is set on master or single.

Make sure everything is plugged in.

Make sure your computer sees it. If you can see it but just can't access it (it may be because there isn't a CD in it), then you might need to install a driver.

Do those checks and report back.

Key word in the original post 'SCSI'.

If you're out of fuel, you become a pillbox;
If you're out of ammo, you become a bunker;
But if you're out of time, you become heroes.

- Russian tank crewman's saying.

Didn't this appear in the film Beast Of War?

To answer both:

1) Opal: The system does indeed detect the drive and its' absence both at bootup and in windows. The CD-burner software conforims it being there. Repeated driver reinstalls have actually made it work - ofr about 10 seconds each time. Last time I managed to disable my secondary HDD. No idea how, and got it working again thankfully.

2) Bodies: Aye, that it did. It was first quoted by some Russian tanker whose name is now I believe lost to history, during of course the last world war.

hmm... check termination, check information on compatibility with host adapter, and probably go ahead and verify everything's got a unique ID just to be sure.

'Sok, I found the problem. The motor's buggered; hence the rror appeared because there was no output from the drive. Thanks anyway people!
