What the future will hold.

OK. I am in my late teens, am at Uni taking a History and Politics course (which is largely forgettable, in the case the case of this thread).

The thing is, I have no idea what to do with my life. Currently, I am thinking about taking a teacher-training course when I finish my degree, with a view to be able to fall back on teaching if all else fails.

But my question is (and this is mainly aimed at the older posters), during your late teens, did you have any idea what you wanted to do with the rest of your life?

PS, I really am quite drunk at the moment, so any spelling/grammatical mistakes I make, I blame on the alcohol.

when i was in my teens i had no idea what i wanted to do with my life. Still not too sure about the answer to that one. My advice for study though is not to study with the intention of going into a particular acareer, study what you are interested in. Much more rewarding that way.

i agree with trotterstan.
no one knows what they want to do when they grow up
take courses that interest you and challenge you. somewhere along the line youll decide where to start.
you will have many many different jobs before you retire so just get a good education and start out with something you are interested in.

I'm having the same problem...

I'm nineteen and I'm still debating it, but im going to try and take several classes that appeal to me to help me decide. The best thing you can do is pick a career you will be proud to have, and not something you will hate. I know I need to pick something, but there's so much I want to do. lol Enough of my rambling; just pick a career that will always be needed. Like a doctor, mortician, or hell even a lawyer.

I did. But after a few years and seeing a bit more I changed it. I'd say about 2/3rds of the people I knew in college who knew what they wanted for a career when they showed up, changed it during college. Well that excludes the el-ed and spouse majors, they had a much lower change rate. My first roommate wanted to be a doctor for years before he got to college, but once there he found chemistry was what really interested him. My advice is pick a field that interests you and a goal to work towards and realize it is not set in stone.

Any advice for those who want to follow such a future ?

* " Don't " is N/A here, ;)

For what its worth, I'm 18, studying Lab Tech, and worked out that if I start a pathology course next year at my college I'll have another two years of not needing to think about the future, :D

To be honest, I have no idea why they picked me. I only use to post in the UN. I had never been in moderation or tech or General. On some level it was like the rest of the forum didn't exist. Then I became a mod. Found General and have been here ever since..lol I go to mod too.. hehe, but I never went back to the UN. Go figure.

Well I'm just 18, and I've started a career as a technician in a genetics lab, and going to Uni to do Biology, fact is about 2 months ago I thought the furthest I'm gonna get in life is wrking behind a bar, or for the post office like the rest of my family....at the end of the day if your happy, who cares where you are.

Well at least I seem to be ok, a lot of my friends are in the same boat (except those doing more vocational courses like Medicine, Dentistry etc). I tend to live for the moment. Rather then the future.

But it is good to see that few knew what they wanted to do when my age.

I just got a case of the "Oh shit, I am going to fuck my life up"s.

I think the part were you say "no one knows what they want to do when they grow up" is a bit wrong. I'm 16 and I know exactly what I want to be and it's been the same since I was 12 or 13.

i just turned 19 and i don't know exactly what i'm going to do with my life. I'm studying civil engineering now and that takes at least 5 years, then i'll probably try to become a doctor and i plan on ending up somewhere doing research. I might even go to the US to live and work there.
