Which "opposing views" poster do you respect the most?

The Holy Word

Is there a poster who, despite the fact you normally end up on opposite sides of the debate, you respect for whatever reason?

For me it's Tygaland. His politics are wrong most of the time ;) but he always argues logically, and never evades a question.

Hmm, this is a good question. I'm going to go with "Pepsiholics"

Pepsiholics is on the wrong side habitually in my opinion of the argument, however, he deals in facts even if he does tend to spin them, but I suppose we all do that.

I use to think Eli as well, but he's gone a bit extreme these days.

Also, he doesn't come around very much any more, but I use to also have quite a bit of respect for Redneck Geeks even though we never agreed politically.

There are several.

Purly Euclid, for starters. I rarely agree with him, but I can never fault him on reasoning or backing up his points.

Bottle, at least on religious topics. We're on opposite sides of the field, but I have nothing but the highest respect for her conclusions and her arguments (even if they are sometimes a little snide).

Salishe, always. Sometimes we agree, but even when we don't, I respect the man's thought process and do understand where he's coming from.

There were some other Conservative posters on the old boards who don't seem to have come along to Jolt, but I enjoyed discussing issues with them, even when I was absolutely, positively, 100% certain that they were wrong, wrong, wrong. :)

Bottle, whereever we disagree. Makes me think hard and isn't afraid to admit when she's wrong (although she doesn't admit it as often as I think she is, but NM)

I'll go with Salishe as well--we disagree on lots of things, most especially immigration, but we generally keep it civil, and I respect that.

Bottle. She may remind me of Legato from Trigun, but she is still a good debater, albeit a depressing one.

Perhaps I shouldn't say this.. but the information was found as a poster and not as a mod and not even by me, but was showed to me and I in turn showed it to Zep.. but, I would of in the past picked Salishe as well. However, a couple of threads have been pointed out to me over time where there is no mistake that Salishe is not being honest with us about quite a bit. There are absolute things he's not being honest about, then based on those things, I have to question every thing he says.

Huh? This is rather upsetting. That's kind of a big charge to level at someone without providing the proof you're using.

I actually enjoy my debates with The Holy Word because they stick to the point and respect others opinions even if they do not agree. They do, however, use www.dictionary.com a little too much since I used it against them.... :p

All of them. I find that almost everyone on NS, both left and right, is courteous, intelligent, studious, and backs up what s/he says. There are a few rare exceptions, but overall, everyone who disagrees with me does so in a polite and civil manner, for which I am grateful.

Dragons Bay seems to be the only one that I can continue to hit in the head with a shovel, and still we don't kill each other.

I also appreciate E B Guvegrra, which is confusing - we seem to argue, while also being on the same side of the argument...

I also appreciate Bottle, and Opal Isle - although it's often hard to tell if I'm arguing against or with them...

Yea, I noticed Goed's name as last poster here and realized thought I might offer him up as my most respected opposing view...but we're not really opposites in everything. We're like the opposite of both side of the evolution debate and end up on the same side...

I can go along with your comment regarding Purly Euclid, although I think he is upset with me most of the time LOL, but yeah we have had some good debates.

As far as Salishe is concerned, all I can say is NO comment.

I have really never locked horns with Bottle.

There were some others on the old boards that put up very good battles and forced me to go to the resource department to get ammunition. Very challenging debates indeed. The best debates are where both parties can actually learn something, although it can be painful at times, if you catch my drift.

The posters that are the most annoying, are those who stick strictly with opinion and are unwilling or unable to back up their claims. They will repeat their claim over and over, ad nauseum, and all that does is cheapen the debate? Rhetoric and opinion are not useful debating tools, as far as I am concerned.

Having stated all that, there are also times when there needs to be a bit of humour tossed in, just to lighten things up a bit. Some posters seem to have a good talent for that, and I think you do a good job there Berk :)

Back in the olden days, when it was all different to how it is now...

you know, back when 'jolt' was a high-caffeine energy drink, and nationstates still had it's own forum....

back in that dream-time, i had another nation (the Democratic Republic of Western Shinma), and had one arch-nemesis... with whom I locked horns in a demonic titan battle, over issues of religion - but, who I kept in the highest regard, and really did feel like I learned something from our head-to-heads.

I think he was 'Satan', but, he doesn't seem to be around anymore...
