Allmusic defines Hard Rock as:
"
Hard rock is a term that's frequently applied to any sort of loud, aggressive guitar rock, but for these purposes, the definition is more specific. To be sure, hard rock is loud, aggressive guitar rock, but it isn't as heavy as heavy metal, and it's only very rarely influenced by punk (though it helped inspire punk). Hard rock generally prizes big, stadium-ready guitar riffs, anthemic choruses, and stomping, swaggering backbeats; its goals are usually (though not universally) commercial, and it's nearly always saturated with machismo. With some bands, it can be difficult to tell where the dividing line between hard rock and heavy metal falls, but the basic distinction is that ever since Black Sabbath, metal tends to be darker and more menacing, while hard rock (for the most part) has remained exuberant, chest-thumping party music. Additionally, while metal riffs often function as stand-alone melodies, hard rock riffs tend to outline chord progressions in their hooks, making for looser, more elastic jams should the band decide to stretch out instrumentally. Like heavy metal, hard rock sprang from the mid-'60s intersection of blues-rock and psychedelia pioneered by artists like Cream, Jimi Hendrix, and the Jeff Beck Group. Blues-rock and psychedelia were both exploring the limits of electric amplification, and blues-rock was pushing the repeated guitar riff center stage, while taking some of the swing out of the blues beat and replacing it with a thumping power. Hard rock really came into its own at the dawn of the '70s, with the tough, boozy rock of the Rolling Stones (post-Brian Jones) and Faces, the blues-drenched power and textured arrangements of Led Zeppelin, the post-psychedelic rave-ups of Deep Purple, and the loud, ringing power chords of the Who (circa Who's Next) setting the template for much of what followed. Later in the decade, the lean, stripped-down riffs of AC/DC and Aerosmith, the catchy tunes and stage theatrics of Alice Cooper and Kiss, and the instrumental flash of Van Halen set new trends, though the essential musical blueprint for hard rock remained similar. Arena rock also became a dominant force, stripping out nearly all blues influence and concentrating solely on big, bombastic hooks. During the '80s, hard rock was dominated by glossy pop-metal, although Guns N' Roses, the Black Crowes, and several others did present a grittier, more traditionalist alternative. Old-fashioned hard rock became a scarce commodity in the post-alternative rock era; after grunge, many guitar bands not only adopted a self-consciously serious attitude, but also resisted the urge to write fist-pumping, arena-ready choruses. Still, the '90s did produce a few exceptions, such as Oasis, Urge Overkill, and the serious but anthemic Pearl Jam.

"

This definition shall apply as far as this poll goes.

Where are the mighty Napalm Death?

I'm afraid I have to differ strongly on Hendrix as well. IMNSHO, he's got to be one of the most overated artists ever. Technically good, but far too prone to tedious egomassaging guitar solos for my liking. And he's responsible for Steve Vai, a crime for which he can never be forgiven.

But out of those, easily Metallica.

There's no question about it. Iron Maiden is the best. You just have to listen to the Number of The Beast or Powerslave albums to know that.

I mean, how can you beat Run To The Hills, Hallowed Be Thy Name, The Trooper, or Two Minutes To Midnight?!?!

Metallica is just in it for the money and doesn't give a crap about their fans.

YOu have bands from so may different genres of rock up there.

i.e.

Metallica is Speedmetal.
Judas Priest is slightly different Metal
Jimmi Hendrix is just rock.

If you want the best metal band of all time, it's gotta be Slipknot, but once again, theyre technically Thrashmetal. It's just really hard to compare all these different groups and artists.

You should make this like a tournament. Have like 32 of the greatest hard rock/heavy metal bands split up into groups of four. Then the winner from each group of four moves on into the next group of four, and so on and so on, until we're left with a heads-up competition between the top two vote-getters.

(WHO THE FUCK ARE THE YARDBIRDS?)

The Yardbirds are an old rock band from england in the 60's. They are know for the great guitarist that played for them. They had the following guitarist at one time or another:
Jeff Beck
Eric Clapton
Jimmy Page

intersting note: the Yardbirds are the reason Led Zeppelin was formed. They disbanded before a tour of europe and let Jimmy Page with the task of finding a replacement band for their gigs. Jimmy founded Led Zeppelin for the express purpose of this tour (they even were called the new yardbirds). The rest is history.

I think a more appropriate question would be, "Who is the best hard rock musician in this poll ." I personally think that Nirvana deserves at least a spot on that poll, and I'm sure there are musicians out there that I would like more than anyone on there that I haven't heard of. You definitely ommitted some sweet bands on that list dude.

i'm not sure who the yardbirds are so i have no comment there..

The Yardbirds are a legendary band from the sixties. Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page all were their lead guitar player at some point.
Actually, Led Zeppelin started out under the name "The New Yardbirds".
As great a fan I am of this band, I disagree with calling them hard rock. They are a rhythm & blues band, just like The Animals were. They are simmilar in many ways, as both being the loudest bands in the early sixties.

The Yardbirds are perhaps most famous for their song "Train Kept A Rolling", which has been covered endless times by everybody from Aerosmith to Motörhead.

I agree with you that the Animals were generally a rhythm & blues band, but both they and the Yardbirds firmly belong to the "hard rock" camp for their more psychedelic efforts.

Yes ..::snicker::..
I met him when I was 18, he stood up to my nose(make no mistake he is freaking huge like a tank, or used to be)
The a few minute later a friend of mine went into the store to meet him and he had gotten a ..::snicker::.. a milkcrate to stand on.

A few years later, a smoking hottie I know was back stage when danzig was on tour with Sabbath, and Glen was being...Glen, she jumped in his face asked him who he was, then said:" no really WHO ARE YOU, that is Sabbath on stage and you are no one, and when Ozzie gets done out there, I will be done in here." Jimi, man. Vote for him. Greatest guitarist ever, and also manages to sing at the same time. Jobs for Jimi: Lead Guitar, Rhythm Guitar, Vocals, recording, producing, mixing, creating never-before-used effects, songwriting, lyric-writing, and more, all the while maintaining an extremely high level of proficiency in each. Lets not forget about the Bass and Drums, too. Noel Redding, Billy Cox, Buddy Miles, and Mitch Mitchell were some of the greatest ever at their positions. Jimi Hendrix made ""Are You Experienced?"". There ya go. Vote for Jimi Hendrix, or the terrorists win, man. Seriously. Osama has a bet riding on Metallica. Don't give him the satisfaction.

this is one of the hardest decisions of my life. while i will admit that pink floyd is not metal or even hard rock, i think they are one of the best up there, simply because their music just moves me liek nothign else. altho it was unfortunate that sid barret had to leave. i will say tho that the best metal or hard rock band up there is metallica or maiden. and the best guitar player is hendrix. hands down. and van halen has just such catchy songs, they rock. and you should all vote for the yardbirds because evn though they werent that great in namesake they were the precursors to led zeppelin, the greatest of all time.

As far as heavy metal goes, Atreyu gets my vote for heavy metal. For hard rock, you num nutz forgot Queen. For this sin you will all burn in hell in a flame of whichever color youchoose, as long as it is orange.

Pink Floyd's official style is "Art & Progressive Rock", as is Rush's. Are you going to tell me that Rush isn't Hard Rock? Art & Progressive Rock is certainly an offshoot of Hard Rock. Pink Floyd plays a Psychedelic, Blues-rock, Progressive-type thing. That's what ushered Hard Rock in. However, vote for Jimi Hendrix.
