I am not trying to flame, just asking. Why are you an Anarchist? What made you become one?

I realized the true nature of authority as a force of violence and rejected the status quo. I guess I freed my mind a bit like in The Matrix.

I'm an anarchist because... the government in the US isn't doing a very good job, and other countries are even worse off. So let's not have any rulers at all! We can do better ourselves.

Dunno if that made any sense.

Because I'm a spoiled college kid who jumps on the bandwagon of whatever ideological trend is cool this year...

I also like to dress in black and smash windows; It makes me feel tough

OK, not flaming y'all, but...

You realize that in order to create an anarchy you must first replace the government with an anarchic (???) government. In order to have anarchy you must first have government.

not an anarchist..

but in today's political environment a classical liberal (see Jefferson for an obvious example) with libertarian sympathies, like myself, has more in common with anarchists than any mainstream political movement.

I admit it'd be cool to have no government, I could run around hacking people with swords. But since there is hardly any chance of the government falling (unless they are like all killed of something;a-bomb?) I've got to stick with collecting swords and hacking trees. *moan* I want to hack people to pieces. There is this one guy that really... Oh um. Anyways, I am a hopeful anarchist.

You mean like the government does to people that disobey it?

Anarchy is obscure, it in theory can't exist. As soon as two people get together and agree on a set of rules, true anarchy is dead. It's an implausible idea.

Oh well.

* Apologies to any actual real Anarchists on this board whose political views are probably very dear to them and find this sort of stereotyping by ignorant people offensive

I prefer the term "Freedom Thinker" to Anarchist, like the term "Socially Aware" to Communist, or "Economically Righteous" to Capitalist.

And the reason I am an 'Anarchist' is because I've lost all faith in society, because society has lost all faith in me.

Well no Anarchist has done back. Many have written how they see an Anarchy working though. But those aren't rules, just hope.

You do realise that there are about as many theories of Anarchism as there are Anarchists right?

Oh yeah, I was just giving my opinion on how I see it.

To the extent that I am at all, I am an anarchist because I am a pacifist and feel that the imposition of a state's authority over its citizens through the threat and use of force is incompatible with that ideal.

Um, dude - there were laws long before the bible...and how about the parts of the world that never recognized/followed it? No rules in the Aztec empire? Open a damn book.

Because government has no valid philosophical justification and is inimicable to liberty.

Don't forget to vandalise a war memorial, nothing shows how opposed you are to rulers by disrespecting the people who died to defeat a fascist dictator....

Anarchy is a fun concept and all but lets be honest people are always ruled over by something, Governments, religions, morals, even emotions. The anarchist ideal is freedom but we always chain ourselves down with something, faith, loyalty, honor, money, hatred, anything......Just pick the chains that will hold you down and get on with your life.

Most anarchists believe in direct democracy as a way to make decisions.

I generally respect you but that's a really pathetic counter-argument. People have murdered each other for decades, does that mean that random violence is acceptable? Of course not.

True anarchy in theory is the absense of a government or central rules system. Two people getting together and agreeing on something hardly nullifies an anarchy. It does no more to anarchy than two pedophiles getting together and agreeing child sex is ok. They may have agreed, but no one else does and nothing else has changed.

anarchy is trust in the individuals conscience over any form of mob rule or central authority. the reason we're in such a bad state to have anarchy is because people dont often exercise thier consciences, problem solving, and decision making because of the status quo.
