New classified documents implicate U.S. forces in rape and sodomy of Iraqi prisoners

Jul 28, 2004
By OSHA GRAY DAVIDSON

It has been months since the now-infamous photographs from Abu Ghraib revealed that American soldiers tortured Iraqi prisoners -- yet the Bush administration has failed to get to the bottom of the abuses."There are some serious unanswered questions," says Sen. Susan Collins, a Republican on the Armed Services Committee. The Pentagon is stalling on several investigations, and congressional inquiries have ground to a halt. The foot-dragging is astonishing, given that Congress has access to classified documents ......

The new classified military documents offer a chilling picture of what happened at Abu Ghraib -- including detailed reports that U.S. troops and translators sodomized and raped Iraqi prisoners. The secret files -- 106 "annexes" that the Defense Department withheld from the Taguba report last spring -- include nearly 6,000 pages of internal Army memos and e-mails, reports on prison riots and escapes, and sworn statements by soldiers, officers, private contractors and detainees.

In the files, prisoner after prisoner at Abu Ghraib describes acts of torture that Taguba found "credible based on the clarity of their statements and supporting evidence provided by other witnesses." The abuses took place at the Hard Site, a two-story cinder-block unit at the sprawling prison that housed Iraqi criminals and insurgents, not members of Al Qaeda or other terrorist organizations.

Not only have some US soldiers violated the Geneva Convention, but the military hierarchy has been very reluctant to admit the facts and I don't know if there will be effective and efficient punishments againts those despisable men. I am convinced that those acts are horrible and quite inhumane, and that those acts will never happen again...

I would imagine that the Bush administration has not gotten to the bottom of this issue for political reasons? I am sure that they would like to deal with this AFTER the election in November? You might recall that the finger pointing went as high as Donald Rumsfeld and even George W. himself, in regards to acceptable levels of torture?

Sometimes torture is necessary to protect the larger number. Sexual humiliation is a very diluted form of torture and doesn't leave any physical scars. I don't care if a number of Iraqis are stripped naked and piled onto one another if it is done with the intention to protect the greater populace.

Torture is never necessary! It also has been proven to be a bad way to get accurate information, because they will tell you any thing you want to hear to make you stop.

Could someone please give me a link? I'd like to see this for myself. If it's false, shame on whoever reported it. If it's true, we better start seeing some court martials.

Look, America has its faults- plenty of them- but so does every other nation on the planet. Please don't flame the entire country just because a few of its people may have done some sadistic things.

Except in the case of the guy we turned over to the Egyptians. They put the guy on a rotisserie and "roasted" him over an open flame. He gave up some great information and survived to testify before congress when they were investigating the CIA for turning prisoners over to other countries to do the dirty work. ;)
