Good Music

Now, as most sane people know, MTV blows. I think this is a common agreement. But, somehow, they manage to play the same 4 videos all day, molding music to their will. I have yet to see a good song on MTV. By doing this, they make what is popular popular. And none of it is good. Rap, Pop, none of it enjoyable.

So this filth stays at the top of the charts. Now, back in the day (and when I say "back in the day" I mean before the whole Grunge "thing" ended) there was good music. Good popular music. Led Zeppelin, The Beatles. What happened? Somehow the phrase good popular music became an oxymoron. Well, don't despair. Or do, if you don't believe me.

I am 13. Now, it may be different elsewhere, but at my school, for every one kid that likes rap, there are two kids that are listening to Classic Rock. For every one kid who frequents Hot Topic, there are three kids rooting through their parent's CD's looking for Led Zeppelin IV.

So why am I mentioning this? What relevance does it have?

Those kids who are mouthing Stairway To Heaven in class are learning instruments. Some of them, at least. Now, when you listen to good music, you're going to be influenced. If this trend happens to be occuring everywhere, there may be hope yet for music.

(And just to let everyone know, yes, there is good music today. But it's not topping the charts. You have to dig to find it.)

Yep.

If you havent heard many of the songs I listed, you should.
Theyre all really good blues-rock tunes.

Well, I just listed them 'cause Stairway To Heaven was being talked about in another thread. Some of their music I actually don't like. Judging from your name, you like the Dead Kennedy's. They're one of my favorite bands. I like all these other bands and people (and more I can't think of):

Muse
The Who
Jimi Hendrix
AC/DC
In Flames
Tool
Nirvana
Rush
A Perfect Circle
AFI
At The Drive-In
The Mars Volta

Tons more. Don't want to list them all.

And what is exactly wrong with Led Zeppelin? Bear in mind that hard rock and metal originated in them. You may not like some of their songs, but it was a defining band who still influence today's generation. I find it a perfect example for the point Tellenthion tried to make.

Plus I like them.

maybe I'm just pessimistic...but even the talented musicians today who like good music don't make it, because MTV doesn't play it and they don't make as much money off of it...So they model themselves off of Good Charlotte, et al. after their first CD or two...
seems kinda silly to me.
but it's like...they make a cd that people like...so they make another, that is ok
then they're making lots of money so they're like, hey, let's start mass producing our music!
And mass production is where it breaks down
actually...many of them don't even release that many albums

guess I can't really say why they suck...

But I do have hope for you young'uns

My personal advice is to look into "low rock", a subgenre that's never really caught on. Find some Morphine and see how few people can identify the bad.

I didn't mean to imply that. It's just the only music that has a chance of making a comeback from what I see.

That said, I like classic rock, along with some modern rock (Modest Mouse, Simple Plan, Blink 182, lots of others). However, my true love is good country music.

JOHN DENVER
ALABAMA
MONTGOMERY GENTRY
TOBY KEITH
ALAN JACKSON
JIMMY BUFFETT (not really country, but I live at the beach)
TRACE ADKINS
UNCLE KRACKER
DIERKS BENTLEY

Well one more often plays the Sax, but yes, 2 bass players and a drummer.

People often have heard more Morphine than they know, although the band is no longer (lead singer died years ago), the music has been in several movies and themes from the band are used in a fair amount of non-entertainment TV.

I have heard a bit of Jazz/Blues, and I have to admit a weakness to IDM, but pretty much any other good music I've heard from the past...30 years falls somewhere into rock- which is a very broad category

I'm confused as to the eyeroll (really, I am)
I do get the point of the thread
I just made a joke about a passing comment that itself, had no bearing on the thread, and felt the need to defend myself after being personally insulted. (though it was probably unnecessaary- you don't really have to respond to "those types") so I apologize for the hijacking

I think the point of the thread is that there is no good music, but help is on the way! Mr. Squares pointed out that other good music doesn't exist, my real point was that, even though good non-rock music exists, it isn't being released, which does stick to the point of the thread...There is no good music being released

and yes, there are other things than Wagner (and rock)
However, my claim only assertted that Wagner was the only good thing in music (other than rock) which is subjective
You're statement asserted that the Beatles were the only rock band, which is basically objectively true...and besides, you were wrong, since they did just release an album

(though someone has probably just recently done one of Wagner's works and released it too, tee hee...but yeah, I am just being a smart ass)

I remember in my old school they had MTV playing in the lounge all the damn time. Finally I got sick of it and went up there and changed the channel to something better. I found a nice war movie, The Green Berets I think. So I sat down and started watching it. Then somebody came up and tried to change it back after about twenty minutes. He said something like, “wouldn’t you rather be watching a bunch of girls in bikinis dancing around instead of all these guys crawling around in the dirt?”

My response was, “what’s the matter, you can’t get any by yourself so you’ve got to watch it on TV?”

He begrudgingly walked away. :D
