So was Carthage during its Prime. The Punic wars were like what would happen if China and the U.S. went to war. It was a clash of the titans in which Hannibal shoud have attacked rome and burnt it to the ground before the Romans tricked him back to Tunisia. It all could have ended there and then..

Rome was more than Rome. Even without it, Rome would have fought on.

he was considering his masterful victory at Cannae. But you must remember one thing Rome didn't fight wars as other powers at that time. It was "do or die" for the Romans

It was during the second Punic wars for Carthage, too. After it they baisically were dead. Teh Third Punic War was barely a war. Rome just creamed Carthage and burned it to the ground...

quite true...the 3rd punic war probably wasn't necessary...carthage was a shadow of her former self

Its sad, when you think about it. Carthage had this rich culture and its jsut SWPT away by the Romans. I wish teh Carthaginians had won, but i guess te world would be different if it did. I cant tel if it would have been better or worse though...

well since rome won its kinda irrelevant to who i vote for. but since it is a poll i voted for rome because youmust fear their mighty legions...and i dont like the idea of some phoenician colony taking over the world....so i think we're better off with rome as they were much better city planners and they didnt jsut conquer and destroy..they absorbed cultures and created one of the greatest growth periods ever. hail caeser

even with the military genius of Hannibal, he was just one commander. The other Carthagian commanders in the 2nd Punic War didn't fare as well as he did. Even though hannibal had a sizeable force in Italy for more than 15 years, the Romans overtook their Spanish territories, reestablished control over Sicily, and defeated Carthagian armies in Africa near Carthage itself. Hannibal performed very well in the war, but even that could not defeat the Romans

I guess you dont know what Carthage started OUT as a pheonician Colony, but it surpased the Pheonicians and their cities. It outlived them, and it was a great Empire. That what i dont liek about most of you people, you think any nationt that opposed rome (besides Greece) was just bent on mindless destruction! The world isnt jsut in black and white, you know!

Which country, the USA or China, still employs war elephants, and why haven't I been informed of this before now?

The people of Carthage were Greek and Phoneician colonists. Those Carthaginians of that time were not greedy, bloodthirsty conquerers. If they had won those wars, think of how much more stable the world would be. Africa, instead of being an empty place without power, would be the centre of a revival of classic Greek ideals. Seafaring coolness. Yeah

The march over the Alps? Brilliant. But they should have left the elephants behind.

I Agree, the wrold would have been a better place if CArthage had won. And it might have been that the AFricans were the CEnter of the Civilized world, and they sold the Europeans into Slaver :D! (FYI, im Caucasian, so thats not a racist remark, its something that may have happend!)

;) But the Africans did sell Europeans (and other Africans) into slavery. The Carthageans sold Roman POWs as slaves. Also the Barbary Pirates (from North Africa) sold Europeans as slaves during the 17th, 18th and early 19th century.

The Africans also sold (and in Sudan still sells) other Africans as slaves, just like Europeans sold other Europeans.

I know that Carthaginians sold Romans into slavery. The Romans sold CArthaginians into Slavery. I was just talkign about an alternate History, liek instead of Europeans discovering N.America, teh Africans would Discover S.America, and MAke Europeans work their Cocaine Plantations :D
