Descrimination and Race in America

I feel like this takes place in many ways, certainly some parts of my state. im sorry but i think arguments pro discrimination are not valid, i don’t think anyone can justify this behavior on any logical level. why can't we all be more compassionate?

Anyway, the reason i started this thread is because i was talking to a friend and she was telling me about this conversation that she had. Roughly she was discussing problems in America and in the end, she said that much of it came down to race. What i think she meant was that race is the most prevalent, almost everyday issue (depending on where you live).

I think this is true to a certain extent, because race is easiest to judge, i feel like racism will persist forever, that its an affliction of which the populace will never be fully cured. i feel that it is taught, and to discriminate is not an inherent trait.

any thoughts?

Well, I personally believe that people are naturally afraid of that which is different. So, even if you know intellectually that it is wrong to discriminate against...say... Chinese people, you still might have an internal fear of their differences, which can turn to loathing... :(

However, I do not think that all of society's problems can be blamed on racism. Obviously, some groups (as a general whole) are more prosperous than others, but that is simply because of factors that I'd rather not get into now (Read Guns, Germs, And Steel by Diamond... Good Book).

Where I live people are pretty much football mad (soccer for our friends over the water). The local team, Newcastle (the Toon) have what is best described as rabid support. If you are black, white, of Pakistani origin, Oriental no one cares. Put a black and white shirt on sit in a pub, watch the match and people will see you shirt not your skin. Here (contrary to recent cr~*p BBC drama) people are more bothered that you might support Sunderland (a bus ride away) than they are about you being black.

One of the reasons I think this is so, is because people, black, white Asian are saying I’m a Geordie (look it up), and that has nothing to do with skin colour. People up here are pretty tolerant as long as your not a Makem or from ‘Down South’ (London specifically).

So basically if you put yourself apart you will stay apart.

i looked up the book and read a little blurb on it. i agree with you that the origins of race and discrimination can be tied to countless things. But i feel that in today's world, racism is very obvious and i think education is the only weapon, not fear and guns.

Only if you mix beer into the mix, then put Geordies and Makems in the same room. But then they will get up next morning and give each other a lift to work and rip the P*ss out of the person who's side lost.

And you should really look into the world of the Geordie if anyone has that name!

Football and violence. Football is the excuse rather than the reason.
