My firend told me that Canada has legalized p2p file-sharing and has made it up to the industry by charging a levy on recordable media (i.e. DVD-Rs) Is this true? If it is are there any Canadian woman that want to get married for a few years?

It's false that Canada has legalized sharing of copyrighted material. However, the courts stated that p2p for public material is perfectly acceptable. Also, the music industry tried to use the court to force the various ISP to divulge the names of some of their clients that are using a lot of bandwidth, as they argue that they are uploading copyrighted material. They were denied. In the US, the music industry used that method to get the names and filed suit against them. That's probably where the rumor got started.

Also, IIRC, in Canada the crime is not downloading copyrighted material but uploading it to someone else.

As for taxes of recordable media, it'S true that there's a tax of blank cassette, CD, DVD, what have you to pay for the lack of copyright payed.

Sorry I can't help you with the wife thing...

I knew they were talking about passing a law to make uploading illegal...but has it actually BEEN passed? If so, when...and do you have a link to info about it....since I'm still uploading music in Alberta..oops.

uploading copyrighted material and not paying the copyright is illegal under the current copyright laws. Uploading in itself is not illegal as far as I know, it's just sharing copyrighted material that is.

I don't have links for you as I read it all in the papers. You see, I was quite concerned as I am used to dowloading music to see if it's worth buying and I wanted to know if the police would be knocking at my door soon.
