Meaning as in genetic ... can it be treated with medicines, chemotherapy, a pleasantly scented wipe? Is ignorance nature or nurture?

Ignorance is natural and genetic. All humans are born knowing nothing and they absorbe knowledge as they grow. There is no shame in being ignorant, because we all are.

Morosity and stubborness on the other hand...

Thank-you.

I think that it is both genetic and natureable...and judging by the popularity of this poll it is also abundant j/k

Tut don't know how to build a Sub, but you're right, no one is completely free of ignorance.

Yeah, there's a difference between ignorance and voluntary ignorance...

Ignorant is simpy one who has not learned.
Voluntarily ignorant is one who refuses to learn, ie, a jackass. Which can be both genetic and learned.

Ignorance isn't being stupid. Ignorance means you don't know about a specific something.

I think it's a combination of natural genetic tendencies and then exposure to ignorant people. Some people can more easily become ignorant.

Your Poll really doesn't go far enough, I'm afraid!
Is Ignorance plentiful?
Well, we've got 574 posts (and counting) on the "Evolutionism vs. Creationism" thread, so I'll let you figure it out from there!

On the other hand, while this 'condition' can be 'treated' with education, I don't think there's any kind of medical approach that's going to help any time soon...
{"Johnny, did you take your 'smart' pill, today?"}

There may be a genetic predisposition to personality traits, that lead to such behaviors as will create Ignorance, but I think we're very far from isolating the 'cause', much less finding any kind of treatment...
and that does NOT excuse the family, and the surrounding society, from encouraging ignorance, or from discouraging displays of intellect!

Ignorant people (in countries where information and education is readily available) are usually proud of their lack of understanding and actively refuse to engage with knowledge.

Knowledge is available in all countries if you're determined enough and follow the right channels.

Also this pole seems to be a not very subtle double entendre. ie, that ignorance (the lack of knowledge about a certain subject) is directly related to not immediately agreeing with everything a liberal says, as is shown by the references to homosexuality and creatonism that have been made on this thread.

tut tut....

Ignorance is a condition that all are born with but many seem to keep. Education is the exepted cure for this unfortunate state and usally works; however, those that are not cured have other problems and should be kept away from others to insure that this condition does not spread.

It's not natural, it results from laziness to find out the truth of something.

Keruvalia, there seriously needs to be an "I don't know" option on that poll.

No. We're all born smrt. Rocket scientists. We know everything.
And then we suddenly turn dumb and have to learn everything from the beginning. Yes, it is a very long, difficult process.
...that's why some people choose to just stay dumb ;)

Naive would refer to humans who are not yet educated in a certain area; whereas, ignorance tends to imply willingness to be close-minded to something and refuse to be informed.

ignorance is not the same as stupidity; we are all born ignorant, and that is a natural state. however, to remain as ignorant in adulthood as you were the day you were born is very unnatural, since you would have to artificially isolate yourself from any and all stimuli in order to maintain that ignorance.

My fiance would say "Some people are born ignorant and learn, Others are Actively Stupid" I'd have to agree with him. Ignorance is something that can be overcome with knowledge a desire to learn, capacity, and opportunity, whereas unfortunately there will always be some people in this world who, no matter how intelligent will continue to be "Actively Stupid"

No, naive does not refer to humans who are uneducated. That is indeed what ignorant means. It's just the current (incorrect) use of the term ignorant as an insult that would imply willingness to be close minded to something.
Naive simply means "marked by unaffected simplicity, or deficient in worldy wisdom".

Hell no...!

Ignorance is the symptom of the super secret "Liberal Organization for Societal and Environmental Research (LOSER)" developed drug, now being dispensed surreptitiously on condoms, hypodermic needles, sex toys, and scan-tron forms.

It's "codename" is Theresa.

It's "brandname" is Fukitol.

I think it's a combination of both. But, unfortunately, stupid people breed like rabbits. They have nothing better to do because they're too stupid to have a job or if they do have a job, it is menial. Thus, they breed. And they have lots of stupid children. The problem is that in fifty years, half the population will have an IQ of 70 or below. The stupid are polluting our gene pool. Thus, the intelligent must start having children if we intend to survive into the next century.
