There is now a difference between Homosexual and Gay

I've noticed that people have been using the word "Gay" as a substitute for "Stupid"

It seems like everywhere I go I hear

He's gay.
That car looks gay.
That teacher is gay.
That is a gay hairdo
You are so gay to think that.
Thats really gay.

The list goes on and on :(

Should this be tolerated? I think it is just an excuse for people to hide their homophobia. "Act like a man."

it's def been around for a while, but mostly it seems to be done as a kinda of term of endearment (esp with the 'u're so gay for that' type comments)... my brohter's are a prime example... they'll be arguing over who get to use the pc or summat and then one will randomly just turn round and say 'but thats so gay!' and they'll both crack up laughing....
maybe thats just my brothers tho?

I have actually used the word gay in this way. And when i stoped and thought about it I came to the conclution that I think it is wrong.

Originally the word gay means happy if I am not missinformed. Would be very wierd if it would also come to mean something that would almost be the reverse.

That is the equivilant of using the word "Queer" to mean "weird" instead of "homosexual"

As far as I can recall both gay and queer never originally were intended to describe any form of sexuality.

Gay meant as far as I know all the way up til sometime in the 1960's and for quite a few hundred years before that, happy, carefree, boisterous etc etc.

Queer has always meant strange, odd, not quite right . it referred to looks, the weather just about anything you could think of that was out of the ordinary which is probably how it came to be associated with homosexuality, which is still a misuse of the word in any case.

But to get back on subject, its simply grammar evolution through the generations. Theres quite a few words out there in the dictionary that if you said them a even 50 years or so ago would mean something completely different than what they mean today.

How about...

"Thats Bad!" (when describing something good)

Or even the context of the word....'

Lie when using facetousness, like when presented with bad news, you might just say "Oh thats just great!"

Or when making an exclamation of something's coolness..."Thats sick!"
