Obama

What do you think? After watching him give his speech at the DNC, I was left with a very good impression of him. Of course, I have no idea what his economic and otherwise policies are, but I think he sends a very good message that there are no 'two Americas, one red, one blue'...this country needs to be united, and we aren't going to do it by bickering about Democrats and Republicans.

I tend to lean socially libertarian (only slightly) and economically right, so I don't know if I'd support his policies otherwise, but he seems pretty good. Seems to me like a better candidate than Kerry.

Anyone noticing Heinz's 'Say something Ketchuppy! II' contest? You get to replace their 'Tomato ketchup' label with a variety of other things...for example, I have a ketchup bottle that declares 'For best results, eat.' Someone should send in an entry to the contest saying 'Bush-Cheney 2004' :)

Obama is a complete idiot who needs to shut his mouth! Its the Liberals who are dividing America and that is the people he supports! To Liberals there is only one America, a Liberal one and all Non-Liberals are not Americans.

He probably would be a better candidate than Kerry, at least at winnning. However, he's one of those candidates, from what I could surmise, that are the feel-good type. He smiles, makes speeches, and regurgitate what the other party members are saying. If elected, however, he wouldn't make a good anything. In short, he's nice to keep around, but he's of no real value to the Democrats once elected. He'll probably win his race, and he may get another term after that. But I doubt he'll be the senator that stands on his own two feet.

I thought so too, Zoogie, and I lean pretty much the same direction as you.

Which is why I think he'd make a good Veep and put Edwards up as Prez and take Kerry out of the picture.

...well, by that logic, the entire Democratic party is full of complete idiots who need to shut their mouths because this split in America has been a theme of the DNC...and this logic is followed by the logic that people like you are the ones who are splitting America, I mean, you just accused the entire Democratic party of splitting America and also called them all idiots who need to shut their mouths because they disagree with you...

Frankly, It seems to me the consevatives who often say something to the effect of, "those who do not support Bush are unpatriotic" would fit into you description better.

As a Chicagoan, I'm proud such a powerful speaker and intellegent* politician is coming from our state.

*Most Illinoisians arn't very intellegent, as indicated by my inability to spell the word and our lack of concensus on what the adjective is for someone from Illinios.

I'm watching the MSNBC commentary on him, and they speak highly of him; he seemed very humble, very intelligent, and very good for America.

I will be keeping my eye on him.

If you've been following Senator Obama's rise to fame in Chicago--and then nationally--you know that he's a fantastic speaker and a great unifier. But since you're curious his positions on specific issues, here are some highlights: he's pro-choice and pro-affirmative action, anti-death penalty, he believes that health care needs more federal funds, that parents should choose their children's schools instead of being restricted to a bad learning environment, and that social security should not be privatized. To learn more, go to http://ontheissues.org/Senate/Barack_Obama_SenateMatch.htm.

Oh, and personally? I think he's great.

Seems to me the ones making the divisive ad hominem statements here are generally folks of a right-leaning position.

In general, people have a hard time evaluating their own behavior. Too many people are convinced that they are right, no matter what the facts are. I find this capacity especially great in those who resist change and fear social progress.

Now, I will allow you to come to your own conclusions without calling anyone names when I ask this question: Which political philosophy, in general, is more resistant to change and social progress?

i'm pretty sure its just chicagoan. i know i tend to forget/ignore that the rest of the state is technically the same state. i think of them as iowans or southerners.

It's been a long, long time since any American politician so deeply impressed this Canadian! I felt like I was watching history being made today with Barack Obama's incredible speech and obvious integrity.

All nations in the world *crave* to have people of such exceptional personhood in political life. If America squanders Obama's qualities and fails to some day elevate him to a top leadership job, that would be a tragic flaw in your national character indeed.

Yeah, you know that one vote from Illinios counts less than one from Rhode Island? This is what infuriorates me about the electoral college.

yeah i am. well, the near burbs anyway. and i'm living back here for the time being actually, after a failed move to hawaii.

my new illinois geography divides the state into greater illinois and lesser illinois. greater illinois is the chicago area - maybe extending to rockford and milwaukee. and lesser illinois is everything else.
