The town I live in is owned by ClearChannel. They own every radio station except our Public Radio channel.
This wouldn't be so bad, except that it has homogenized our radio broadcasts, and about two years ago, there was a train derailment. You ask, "What does this have to do with ClearChannel?". Good question.
The train in question was carrying anhydrous ammonia. This is a dangerous chemical. There was a cloud of anhydrous blanketing the low areas. People woke up in the smell of ammonia, some were overcome by the fumes. There was nothing on the radio to say what was going on. You see, all of the stations were on auto-pilot. This is a policy of ClearChannel. That late at night, there isn't anyone manning the stations. The authorities couldn't reach anyone to make an announcement.
I won't be surprised if ClearChannel isn't named in the class-action lawsuit along with Canadian Pacific railroad, because their negligence created a dangerous situation.
I'm just wondering if anyone else is thoroughly sick of ClearChannel, and the way they've robbed the personality from radio, making it just one more big, faceless conglomerate. A monopoly, really.
