Do you think that the FCC should be dismantled and that its establishment violates the First Amendment?

Well it does do that, but it also does a few good things. It regulates what frequencies of can be occupied by who. Otherwise things would be a mess. And they also gave us the CB. Other than that, they suck.

The question is inevitable: so here's your answer.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is an independent United States government agency, directly responsible to Congress. The FCC was established by the Communications Act of 1934 and is charged with regulating interstate and international communications by radio, television, wire, satellite and cable. The FCC's jurisdiction covers the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and U.S. possessions.

It tells us what we can watch and listen to.. and what's indecent and whatnot..

a few months back, they tried to pass a law that would enable them to shut down any concert/mass gathering for entertainment purposes if the people hosting the event knew or had reason to know drugs were being used. seeing as at these types of events drug use is widespread, every one of them would have the potential to be shut down.

i never really got around to looking into whether legislation was passed or not. someone wanna google it or something?

I think we're forgetting that the FCC is only bowing to commercial interests. Sure, they censor what reaches broadcast, but they're doing it because that's what we ask for. The FCC is following government policy. Policy that people voted for. It's our fault for not voting against what we don't like, and allowing others to speak for us.

Also, broadcasters, the media, broadcast what doesn't conflict with their financial interests. This might be anything that offends advertisers, or something that advertisers percieve might drive away the listeners/watchers/readers. If this happens, they lose money on their advertising, and as a consequence, on sales of product. They also do not want further restrictions placed on broadcasting, so they err on the side of caution.

It's a balancing act, and the media is a business. They can't risk offending certain parties too blatantly.

For once, I agree with you.

Unconstitutional policy is illegal though.

Time changes. I believe the FCC still has a role to play (who wants to see Japanese necrophilia beastiality pr0n splattered all over daytime TV, for instance), but it should be moderated. The United States no longer holds as closely to its old purtianical values.

Oh yeah? What about that whole Janet Jackson/Superbowl fiasco?

Not only was she demonstrating that she was playing to the puritanical values, but the reaction she got was exactly what you'd expect from a nation of people who are still too childish to stop themselves hyperventilating over a flash of nipple. We really haven't come that far from when someone would do the same over a flash of ankle or shoulder.

I think kids should be exposed to nudity, but represented as something blase and natural, and not exclusively associated with sex. I doubt anyone agrees with me, but then again, I think adults should be exposed to the same. Maybe if we started with it being just normal people swimming in the buff, instead of these silicone queens with a vibrator between their legs.

This may come as a shock, but anime isn't nothing but schoolgirls being raped by tentacle demons. I suggest you actually watch some like Trigun or Cowboy Bebop and tell me that it is.

The FCC also regulates media consolidation--or at least they did before Michael Powell became chairman.

Like any government agency, the FCC does some things well and does some things poorly. We need them, but we need them to act from pragmatism instead of ideology.

old math equation

big circle = anime, smaller circle in littler circle = hentai, all hentai is anime, but not all anime is hentai

lets reference

Cowboy Bebop, FLCL, Trigun, Escaflowne, Wolf's Rain, Witchhunter: Robin, Gundam (theres a crapload of these), Sailor Moon, Pokemon, Yu Gi Oh (SM and this were decent before the watchdog soccermoms got involved), Gunslinger Girl, Ragnarok the Animation, i can keep going if you like

They set aside certain frequencies for public use so that the average Joe could go out and talk to other people that they would otherwise probably never know.

That is so completely not the point. I never once said "anime". Jesus, why is it that people see "Japanese" and automatically think "OMG KAWAII OTAKU-CHAN! OMG LOLOLOL!1111"? I've seen anime, I like anime. I happen to own anime. I've also seen some of the more bizarre stuff some Japanese producers greenlight (not that Japanese have a monopoly on bizarre fetishism). My point is, it's the latter that I don't want to see, and the FCC is in place to make sure that kind of stuff doesn't make it to prime time.

As I said in my first post in the thread, it should be moderated, but it still has a role to serve.
