Political Reactions

About the Republicans:

At a democratic fund raiser, many stars and celebrities enjoyed poking fun at President Bush. One joke from VVhoopie Goldberg, riled up most republicans by referrencing his name to a vagina. Many people stated the inappropriateness and vulgarity of this comment; that this fund raiser in no way represented America, and called it a hate-fest.

My take on this:

They say this in no way represents America, but I think it does. Alot of people enjoy humor, they like having it in their lives; if they didn't Comedy Central wouldn't be so popular. Many people have made references to Bushs name, made fun of his intelligence and nearly everything about him. It's not new. It's being televised all the time, because it is funny and I think a majority of people like it. Condeming it like the republicans have shows to me they really lack a sense of humor for something that wasn't even televised to the public (at least I think so, I never saw any commercials for it on any channel, if I did I'd have watched it). President Clinton has possibly been even more ridiculed in his presidency, but I never saw anything resembling this.

Question 1: Do you feel the Republicans reaction is justified and why?

About the Democrats: California Gov. Arnold Swartzanegger made a comment recently, calling opponents "girly men". An outburst from the Democrats stated that this was extremely sexist and homophobic.

My take on this: I applaud Arnold for being able to take a joke about him and use it; his humor is something I admire since he has been mocked for over thirty years now and deals with it positively. The democrats are taking it in a literate term instead of seeing it as a SNL spoof reference; the basic meaning for "girly man" is wimpy, or as I like to say, pussy and I in no way can see how that means he is homophobic.

Question 2: Do you feel the Democrats reaction justified and why?

About the Republicans:

Question 1: Do you feel the Republicans reaction is justified and why?

No.

They need to get a life. What seperates us from many other nations is the fact we can call the President a drunk delusional homophobic jackass and not worry about it. -wonders who is now beating on his door-

As you have pointed out, they had no problems making comments about Clinton. Hypocracy?

Respect is earned; not given.

Question 2: Do you feel the Democrats reaction justified and why?
No.
They need to get a life as well. Part of the problem with the lack of interest in politics in this country is the fact with have a bunch of stodgy old tossers that take themselves far too seriously.

I have gay friends and everyone of them clued into the SNL reference.

I love that fact about this country, and what annoys me if it were up to the Republicans we wouldn't have it. I'm still pissed about Howard Stern getting outed.

What? How does that make sense?

Anyhow...

1. The republicans overreacted but it's not the republicans who take themselves too seriously...it's the celebrities. I hate few things more than celebrities who try to get politically active. They're no better than the average joe...so why should we listen to them?

2. Of course the democrats overreacted. And this response coming from the more "liberal" party. Can I get an eye-roll anyone?

I'm a republican. this all to do with nothing. If you can't joke about the Pres. then there really isn't free speech. She wasn't talking about having him killed or anything. If those people really are reacting that way, they are overreacting.

What? How does that make sense?

It makes sense in that the Republicans (the more right wing, anywho) try to censor everything, and if they don't like it they try to ban it. Look at Micheal Moors film, how they were fighting for theatres not to air Farenheit 9/11. If I don't like a film, I don't watch it. If they don't like a film, they try to make sure noone sees it.

(And when I say this I don't mean all Republicans)

If they aren't any better than the average joe, than why shouldn't they be just as free to express their political opinion? It isn't like they can force people to agree with their views.

The problem with these politicians on both sides is that they forget what it's like to be a normal human being.

I agree that's part of the problem, but I think voters also expect too much of politicians in that they want them to have all the answers and to solve any problem without any sacrifice, especially on the voter's part. Someone mentioned the lyrics ("Nobody's right if everybody's wrong") from a Buffalo Springfield song in another thread, but it seems that no one wants to be told that they have committed wrongs. Thus, in order have to have any chance of being elected, it seems that politicians have to lie to at least some of the people, because nothing comes without some cost.
