First off, I did spell grammar incorrectly on purpose (just in case you thought i actually thought grammar was spelled with an er)

Does anyone else find the lack of grade school level spelling, punctuation and grammar scary?

it was quite obvious you were acting. I go to some of the sites that holds the worst grammar typing people (neopets, gaia, NS...) and not even those people spelled that bad.

Thus, from personal experiance, I was not scared.

If you haven't already, you should read "Eats, Shoots and Leaves" by lynne truss (<--i think). humourous book about punctuation.

Not in the slightest. The internet is near instanteous communication and speed is more important than accuracy. As long as the meaning is not impaired by the spelling, punctuation or grammar, big deal. Imagine it as conversation, not essay writing and you will feel a lot better about it. A goodly number of people consider this sort of thing informal communication, like speech, instead of formal communication and really don't bother with all the nicities of formal communication.

Or better yet, tape record a conversation between two highly intelligent people and transcribe it. The grammar used will likely make the sort of grammar that worries you look good. Spell every word as it is pronounced or elecuted and see how many "spelling" errors there are. And don't forget to use punctuation as it appears in the speech, run on sentences especially.

There's a difference between spoken conversation and written. With spoken conversation, it's much easier to cover a mistake in grammar or spelling. My problem is that people who are making good points have their idea lost by poor grammar. It's a problem when your typing keeps you from expression your views

Well...it's one thing when you aren't good at typing. Then sloppy spelling or shortened words (but not crap-ass grammar) is acceptable. However, people who use the internet a lot and have thousands of posts and spend all day on Instant Messengers have no excuse for poor typing. The one time I took a typing class in high school, on the first day, I took the test at the end of the typing program, scored about 75-80 WPM with 90% accuracy.

I agree when it is said that the strength of an argument is considerably weakened by poor grammar/spelling/etc. Yes, in spoken conversation these things are easily masked and forgotten. Some forms of internet communications, such as instant messangers, are similar to spoken conversation. They allow two or more people to chat and converse with each other, well, instantly. In that media, speed is important and I can understand loss in written English standards when the typist is not both fast and accurate. However, places such as these are not instant messangers.

So spell things right, put the punctuations where they belong, and for God's sake brush up on your grade-school level English.

I can see making a few mistakes when you're chatting and don't feel like proofreading it, but l33t speak is just a pain in the ass.

Yeah, I know what you mean. It's hard to believe people can type so incorrectly. Typos are acceptable, but "I'm typing fast" is not a fair excuse for spelling "evolution" with a "c" and "the" with a "q". I've seen both and more. And don't say that it's different to type than to talk, so a conversation while typing is bound to have errors, because some AOLers would have to have one hell of a lisp or mental disorder to talk the way they talk. I'd choose the second one...
Anyway, here's my translation:
H3LO!1!1111 WTF HOW R U?!??!!!? WTF IM FIEN!1!! WTF LOL WUT IS UR NM3?!!??!?? OMG MAH NM3 IS J3RY!!!111 WTF LOL
Who knows what that really says and where it's from? I give a point to the person who knows. What are points you ask? What AREN'T points?

You forgot to capitalise the second "I"...

That has to have been tought in the first year of schooling.

If you're going to make a thread about typing correctly at least lead by example.

there is perhaps nothing more annoying on the internet, than the endless whine of the grammar/spelling nazis. shut the fukk up you annoying little hall monitor wannabes all language is idiom. in conversational modes like this messageboard all that's important is to be understood. grammar and spelling are all artificial constructs, their rules only bind the sheep who buy into their validity.

First, it is messengers not messangers, but I don't have problems with spelling like some people do. Second, I hate to tell you this, but for a lot of us this is more like spoken conversation, and we treat it as such.

Admittedly this is not as instantaneous as spoken communication, but as long as it fufills the standards of informal communication (conveying information) we are happy, and we certainly don't waste time reformulating thoughts into the laws of formal English. I suppose if we thought in formal English, we would produce messages that follow the rules of grammar and punctuation, but we don't. Why, pray tell, should we waste our time rearranging our thoughts into formal English merely to satisfy people like you who believe form is more important than content?

I will concede that poor spelling and grammar often detract from the impression of the intelligence of the author (in fact I commented on this the other day on these forums), but it is a price we are willing to accept.

That AOL translator's too funny.

However, if you're interested in this kind of stuff (I am), it's written in javascript code. So by right clicking and choosing View Source you can see the actual code used to run the program. The way they did it (or the program they used did it) it explains what each portion of the code does with a short plain english explanation following //
