If you could travel back in time to any moment in history, which would it be?

And, if you were to travel to that moment, what would you change, if anything?
Here are the rules:
1)NO FLAMING.
2)Respect others' beliefs. You don't have to agree, but you DO have to be civil.
3)No whining about "I'm tired of seeing these kinds of threads, waah, waah." If you are, simply don't post and keep your mouth shut. Sorry to be blunt, but I'm tired of people whining.

Uh, just kidding...I think I'd travel to...uh...MEH? Nothing in history looks that appealing to me...

I'd like to go on a villa urbana near Rome. All the luxury, the opulence, the neverending gaity, and the drinking, while being waited on hand and foot by a few hundred slaves. In fact, if it weren't for the way Romans had sex, I might like it there.

I'd prolly wont. Cuz I kinda believe in if you change the past, you also change the future.
The Butterfly Effect is a very nice movie and kinda shows what i believe would happen. Now, I have thought this even before the movie, so don't even start. ;)

I'd like to go back to the time of Alexander the great, save him from dieng, make sure he chooses a propper heir, etc, maybe help him out a bit more, and then see how much history is changed. That or initiate the Industrial revolution in china when they had the chance (forgot the exact year but a 1000'ds of years ago.)

I'd go back and make sure Martin Luther King DOESN'T get assassinated.
I'd like to go back to London UK in the 1660s to find out what Samuel Pepys was like - not just what he looked like but to find out what sort of person he really was, how his voice sounded, how well he played the lute and violin
i'm reading my way through his diaries at the moment - already read 1660, 1666 and 1667, currently reading 1661.
i'd love to know exactly how food was prepared, what they ate and if people really smelled awful in the absence of deodorants etc :)
would i change anything? Sure - they had a fondness for hanging, drawing and quartering people which leaves me cold. Also lack of knowledge about bacteria and stuff meant high child mortality and some horrible diseases...and operations without any anaesthetic aaaaargggghhhhhhhh!!!
yet they survived and we are the outcome of that survival...

Might be very well based on BttF. Tho, I really doubt that i could be the first human who officially thought of that theory or came up with it by myself ;)
If I had the time, workforce and equipment?
Stop the asteroid that wiped out approximatly 75% of all life ending the Cretaceous period - and the glorious rule of the Dinosauria.
I'd go back to 1973 in the Estadio Nacional in Chile and stop those CIA-backed bastards from killing Victor Jara, one of the best singer/songwriters of all time (my opinion of course). I'd make sure he was out of arms reach. Why just him? I doubt I could've stopped the whole coup by myself.

Read a book called "What if..." there it present some guys thoughts what the world would have looked like if Alexander died of old age among other things. Rather intresting.
edit: When i think of it, i think the author was swedish and the orginal name isn't "What if...". Nor do I think it's translated. But my bet is that there is alot of What-if-literature out there.

I'd go back to Mach, 1982, in Florida...I forget the exact day and place...And I'd never let Randy Rhoads get in that plane...
For those who have no clue:
Randy Rhoads was Ozzy Osbournes guitarist on his first and second solo projects (Blizzard of Ozz and Diary of a Madman). Randy died in a plane crash on the date I said above. It's the sadest moment in history for me...Randy was my favorite guitarist, and his music is still the best I've ever heard!

I'd go back and see what Jesus was really like. I'm not Christian, mind you. I just think that Jesus was (probably) a great guy, but the early church unfortunately got rid of some parts of scripture that didn't sync up with their political views.
If I went back in time, I could record his life (perhaps using a camera and a lot of film, or something) better than the remaining scripture which has been translated and translated and translated again. I doubt that it would change people's views that have been hammered into them since they were an infant, but it would at least be interesting.
As long as my observing wouldn't change anything. If there's one thing that Star Trek has taught me, it's "don't fuck with time."

Ok...now that I've scared you shitless!
I actually have always wondered what the real Jesus was like...cause I doubt that the "popular" idea of Jesus is the correct one...If it werent for Randy Rhoads dying so untimely, I'd do exactly what you did...
I too, by the way, am not Christian...but I am deeply interested in all religion!

Oh, I thought of another one.
I could go back to the reign of Emperor Norton I (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joshua_A._Norton), the first and only emperor of the United States. He seems like he would be an interesting fellow.
But again, no interference.

Oh yes, another I would like, damn, to many ruddy choices in the Ancient Times....er, check out the Roman Empire at its peak of power, check out Alexander's Empire, and help him out a bit, oh, back to the Medieval Age and see the Crusades....Ugh....to many choices....I hate these kinds of questions!
I would travel back to 1914 to stop the assasination of Archduke Ferfinand of Austria, thus preventing World War I. Preventing the first World War would also prevent World War II, The Holocaust, and possibly the Great Depression.

Yes there is a lot of What if literature, but it would be interesting to see what acctually would have happened. Be glad I don't have a time mashiene, I would go back to all kinds of random points in time just to see what would happen if I did X, and then try again with change Y, etc... Such as seeing What would happen if I dropped a few solar masses of heavy elements like Iron or so back at the time just after the big bang. Or teach the neadertales about Ironworking, and see how that works out.
