The death of NS

How many of you NS veterans believe that the Jolt Transfer (and frankly, downgrade in many respects) has killed NationStates? Something about this new forum just seems... lacking. I mean, we should be able to open things up now! Where's the search function? The Egosearch!!

Granted, I realize it is slowly speeding up, but has Jolt just killed NS for you, in any way? Please share!

No. I rather enjoy not having to suffer from a slow server anymore.

Being able to actually access the forums when I'm online is a massive improvement over the old server, I never used any of the other features myself...

And you still can do ego searches. Just click on your name and choose the appropriate function. Plus the old search function never realy worked anyway.

look at the top. there's a bunch of little buttons. one says search. search to your heart's content - though only once every couple minutes. and then there is the list of things you've posted in. it can be found under profile, also at the top.

it is both good and evil. Good because its faster. Bad because there are more hosers mucking things up.

I agree that it's nice to not get error messages 2 out of 3 times I try to load a page (especially if I'm trying to post something)
And though I do miss some things, I think access is more important

I don't know if the topics are crappier, but they're certainly more hateful. No one wants to discuss anything anymore, just score points of off shouting down everyone who disagrees with them. Granted, this happened a lot on the old server as well, but it seems more pronounced now. The religious threads are particularly ugly from both sides.

I think the overall site graphics have improved, and the speed improvement is a wonderful plus. Just about the only compliment I can give to the forums is its speed...it's a pity how much autonomous-uh...autonomous-ness...we gave up when we moved to Jolt.

It's like we used to be an exciting local small business, whose service wasn't excellent (speed) but was loved by a large number of people, and now we've been absorbed into the pre-made fabric of some global conglomerate...also well-respected, but not unique and exciting like we used to be...anyone following my analogy? Ah, never mind...:P

I feel the banning of anything remotely resembling "fun" might have something to do with it. Any thread that is not a serious religious/political/sexual debate (and I use the term loosely, since most of the topics on General are just thinly diguised flaming) is considered spam and deated/locked. Someone up there needs to get out more and enjoy life

i had assumed that it was something to do with the onset of summer (for many of us), exams, universities shutting up shop until October...

the number of nations in West Pacific, for eg, has gone from 158 to 121 in a short time. That degree of loss is being felt by most regions i'm involved in.

I also assumed that someone 'up there' had taken that into account when deciding when to do the actual move...

my guess is that come October/November things will hot up again and the place will be humming by Jan/Feb next year

but yeah...something is lacking...

i can only speak about General - take O'Reillys and the Sunrise Tower Club. There was almost always someone there posting and very often a number of people

it was great - when the server allowed - cos there was loads of interaction between people who were regular posters and were used to each other. We had a history and at times it was almost like we were actually together. Chatting but some RP too.

go to the Paradise Club (the Jolt equivalent) now and it's dead

Many regulars have just disappeared from the General Forum...i kinda miss them even if they did rant occasionally :)

Same happened to us when they deated Forum 7. Some of us have formed an offsite forum but it's not the same without the random interaction of "passing trade" from the other forums.

Pros: Server that doesn't crash every 2 minutes
Access to the other Jolt forums including the Spam forum enabling us to play wordgames & generally crap on with impunity.
This smiley - :gundge:
Being allowed to swear (at least in the jolt forums)
The NS mods appear to have finally accepted that FUA is not quite the den of iniquity that they have made it out to be and posted a link to it (albeit about a week too late as it sadly no longer exists)
Signatures
New people to meet in the Jolt forums.
This smiley - :fluffle:

Cons:

OOC: I just miss the old server... Sure, this new one is faster & far more reliable, but the interface sucks & the move turned countless players off to NS, due to the long-ass wait. Plus the search function is more of a hassle to use. I'd take the old one anyday.

Lack of decent RP content & a "Who's On" bar are killing it for me, personally. Maybe with a few updates, this might be like the old NS, but I don't see that in the near future.

My internet connection is totally pathetic, and in the days before Jolt it took forever to load the forums. However, I learned to count on this as a fantastic method of killing time. Therefore it became something of a bonus sometimes when the page loaded for 20 minutes or so and then decided to quit, but that was cool because that's just 20 more minutes down the crapper. but now, i actually have to find something worthwhile to do with my time. So it hasn't killed NS...but it has limited its usefulness in my procrastination. My girlfriend would say that's good...i'm not so sure. hmm.

not sure i agree with you Murfy on them being better cos of not crashing - that kinda added a bit of excitement and, yes, frustration, but it gave the forum character.

Character is sadly lacking in this forum - it always works the same, it looks colourless AND loads of the regulars have disappeared

it is...there a quite a lot of people who have retreated to offsite forums. They feel much more cosy.

Jolt feels enormous (wtf am i saying? sounds really bizarre but that's how it feels) and people i've got to know over the past year are much more thinly spread out - it's much more difficult to find them.

i miss the info about who was online...i know it exists here but it isn't automatically shown at the top of each forum.

not at all...have just become UN delegate and am active in many regions.

One good thing about the forums being offline for so long was that rmbs became much more active.

I'm in 7 regions and have 2 of my own - they are all different and it's great fun :)

Hadn't long found the main forums and had just got to know people and got the hang of navigating around when they went down.

This forum seems - different. And a lot of the people i knew are no longer around - or i haven't found them.

a lot of regions are experiencing reduction of numbers of nations - presumably this is to do with summer and with people not being at uni and therefore no access to a computer.

i'm hanging on in here until the winter when i suspect things will get much more active.

I agree. When I was the Sean Empire, playing on the phpBB forums back in April, things were very lively. There was always some idiot to reply to & declare war on, and always the screams of godmod and the veteran role-players trying to help the n00bs out. Heck, there was even an anti-n00b alliance. A few of them, actually. I was a part of the WMNK for quite some time. GDODAD was ever powerful. They were involved in just about every one of the world wars, and for many of them I was part of the GDODAD. Then I joined GODAD to spice things up a little bit. There was always a way to piss people off then. Now people don't really care. It would also help if I had 567 million people instead of 67 million.

It has died though. It's too easy to get into these forums. I'm used to having to try 5 times to get it to work. Ah, the good ol' days.
