What do you think of these rock bands?

Kanabia

This is a shameless rip-off of Amerigo's metal thread :)
You can find his thread here: http://forums2.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=337424

I'll include some punk here also.

In no particular order of preference...except for the first two which are my favourites :p

Nirvana
Queens of the Stone Age
Mudhoney
Kyuss
The White Stripes
Led Zeppelin
Sloan (Just started getting into them)
AFI (Ditto)
Smashing Pumpkins
The Doors
The Pixies
Weezer
Placebo
Dead Kennedys
Pink Floyd
Hendrix
Alice in Chains (More metal than rock/grunge IMO, but eh.)
Soundgarden
Butthole Surfers
Angelic Upstarts
The Partisans
Stiff Little Fingers
Spiderbait (Popular in Australia, dunno elsewhere)
Black Flag
The Clash
The Vines
The Strokes
Jet
Helmet
L7
Pennywise
Screaming Trees
Stone Temple Pilots
Toadies
Temple of the Dog
Sonic Youth
Green River
Silverchair (I like some of it and hate some of it...)
The Datsuns
The Butterfly Effect (Australian...to heavy to be "rock" but not really metal.)
Radiohead
Foo Fighters
Franz Ferdinand
R.E.M.
Faith No More
B-52's
Janes Addiction

If something isn't here, I either sadly forgot it, don't know it, don't classify it as "rock", dislike it, or haven't heard enough to pass judgement. Feel free to bring up bands that aren't on here, because I want to hear of more good artists and bag ones I think suck, hehe. :) I'll keep updating it as time goes on.

Been meaning to really get into The Who...haven't got around to it yet...So I cant really pass judgement, yet.

(On a personal level, I also hate silverchair with a passion, Daniel Johns is a girly Kurt wannabe dick, but they have a couple of alright songs. I just pretend i'm listening to another band)

The Who are my favourite band. Ever.

I'm a bit uber-60s - that's why my answers to your quiz were a bit negative. I don't hate all rock music, honest! If you had groups like The Rolling Stones and The Yardbirds on there...

Yeah, well, up until not long ago I hadn't heard a whole lot of the older stuff, just starting to get into it now. It's a generational thing :)

Nirvana - easily the best band ever

Amen to that :D

As for the bands you mentioned:

Local H - Don't know them.
Babes In Toyland - Been meaning to hear them.
Bikini Kill - Don't know.
Sebadoh - ditto
Dinosaur Jr.- ditto
The Melvins - Hmm...Well, I've heard some of their stuff which sucks, and some isn't bad. I have a DVD of theirs that's pretty average. Could you give me examples of their best songs?
Therapy? - Dont know them
Circle Jerks - Heard of, but don't know any of their stuff
R.E.M. - *Slaps head* OF COURSE! How could I forget!
Faith No More - Like them.

An example of a good album by the Melvins would be "Houdini" their major label debut. (They aren't on the label anymore) Kurt Cobain plays on two songs, another plus.
Wanton Milkmaids

Generational thing? I'm only 18!

I've been through modern rock. I just prefer the older stuff. Dunno why, I relate to it more. Born too late and everything...
Jello Biafra
24-07-2004, 11:42
Oh, and admittedly their albums tend to be inconsistent. I don't really like the follow up to "Houdini," "Stoner Witch."

Heh, i'm 18 as well. The older stuff is for the most part good, it's just I've focused more on newer stuff until now.

Right, I'll check it out. Some of the songs i've heard are from Stoner Witch (got a friend whos into them, and he put it on one day while I was at his place, didn't do much for me), so I dunno, maybe i've just been unlucky with the ones i've heard.

Queens of the Stone Age - Boring

Trust me, you have to sit down and hear the whole of Songs for the Deaf or Rated R, they're anything but. If you've only heard "No One Knows" on the radio, that's not doing the band justice- you have to take their albums all together.

Most of those are good bands.

Except this one:

Smashing Pumpkins

Heh, howcome? (Aside from Billy Corgan's singing voice)

The Partisans

"17 Years Of Hell" remains a minor clasic, and does actually stand up surprisingly well even today. Is it time to forgive the guitarist for starting Transvision Vamp after the Partisans split up yet?

This may have been said but...you need to put Robin Trower up there. That guy plays some of the best guitar ever. If you want a really really good CD I recomend Bridge Of Sighs by Robin Trower. Amazing. My dad gave me his old albums and i'm hooked. :)

That was the first song of theirs I heard- when I was 17. Hehe, very cool. I don't know Transvision Vamp.

Nirvana- Good band, bit overrated. good nonetheless
Queens of the Stone Age- Some good songs as far as I can tell
Mudhoney- Haven't Heard
Kyuss- ditto
The White Stripes- I agree with someone who said they have two good songs; Those two are every single one of their songs.
Led Zeppelin- As Page put it, perfect blending of light and dark.
Sloan- never heard of them
AFI- new album grew on me, don't much like the older stuff
Smashing Pumpkins- whoever is sayin this band sucks is just trying to not sound like a trite biatch, Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness is easily one of the best albums ever made.
The Doors- good musically and lyrically= great band
The Pixies- been meaning to give them a listen
Weezer- great american rock band, trite but who the hell cares.
Placebo- blank on this one too
Dead Kennedys- punk isn't much my thing
Pink Floyd- some great epic songs, like zeppelin except treading more on the dark
Hendrix- best blues guitarist ever...well him and SRV
Alice in Chains (More metal than rock/grunge IMO, but eh.)- decent
Soundgarden- Kim Thayil is a great guitarist and Chris Cornell can sing like... can't think of a good simile but the man can sing
Butthole Surfers- nice name?
Angelic Upstarts-
The Partisans-
Stiff Little Fingers -
Spiderbait (Popular in Australia, dunno elsewhere)-wow, don't know a lot of these
Black Flag- not bad
The Clash- overrated IMO
The Vines- I honestly want to kill them.
The Strokes- Their music is pretty contrived, but it works for me, they have a nice feeling to their sound
Jet- just another trendy band like the vines
Helmet-
L7- square?
Pennywise- decent
Screaming Trees- listenable, but not my cup of tea
Stone Temple Pilots- these guys got coupled with grunge but they are just a great rock band. Interstate Love Song, Big Empty, Plush are just great songs
Toadies-
Temple of the Dog- isn't that the grunge supergroup?
Sonic Youth- continually doing something new and different.. for decades now. great band.
Green River-
Silverchair- reject cobain clones?
The Datsuns
The Butterfly Effect- umm to seem completely ignorant... Ashton Kutcher sucks.
Radiohead- great ambient sound, not much unlike coldplay
Foo Fighters- I'd like to say they are better than Nirvana. I'm sure some people would like to punch me, but I think Grohl is more diverse in his songwriting and comes up with great hooks.
Franz Ferdinand- Most annoying song i've ever heard. It's so damn repetitive that i would like to assassinate the whole band.. but that's how WWII got started so i better not.
R.E.M.- haven't heard a lot of their stuff but Losing My Religion is a damn good song
Faith No More- another of those that i say aren't my thing, but something i wouldn't mind listening to

I would reccomend:
The Verve Pipe
Jane's Addiction
Pearl Jam
Sum 41
Beck
and for people who said smashing pumpkins suck to go f*** themselves.

The Verve Pipe- Don't know them
Jane's Addiction- Meh, heard some that's alright. Should get into them.
Pearl Jam- I skimmed over them, really. Undeniably talented, but didn't make me sit up and say "wow". Been meaning to buy their albums and check them out properly though.
Sum 41- The image and the sound...just no. I hate that "In too deep" song.
Beck- Old Beck is good. You'd probably like the Butthole Surfers.

Oh yeah, and about the Butterfly Effect- They have no relation whatsoever to the movie. Wrong name at the wrong time I guess :)

Primus
Ween

they should be on the list
Polish Warriors
26-07-2004, 20:57
Well done Primus, Ween, Devo(especially 1975-1984) Helmet started out badass but trailed away from thier roots like Strap it on and In the MeanTime.
Primus- To me the ultimate album there is Frizzle Fry!
My favorite song by Ween is The Blarney Stone "Aye Aye Aye.. Sharpen your boot and blugeon your eye!"

I did not notice Tool on here. Aeinema is a superior album but We like anything by them.
Faith no More- We are convinced that Epic contains no bad songs especially the epic saga of Woodpecker from Mars and a better version of War Pigs in our opinion. We also enjoy the Album Angel Dust

Finally, Devo an extremley underated band that has far superior tracks than just Whip it. Gates of Steel, Mongoloid, My personal B-side fav "Mr. "B"s Ballroom, Freedom of Choice, Girl U want, Jocko Homo I can go on all day.
OH yeah one more it is a death metal Band called Meshugga(Swedish for crazy) I think they are scandinavian or something but they kick ass.

As for Meshuggah, they're alright, but like you said, they are metal, not rock :).

Rammstein
Linkin Park
Manowar

I don't mind Rammstein but not being able to understand the lyrics prevents me from saying I truly like the band.
Linkin Park, I used to hate them, now i've softened that to "strongly dislike". Their music pisses me off but they aren't the most shit band around.
Manowar, I don't know.

Heard of Primus and Ween but don't know the music. I added the B-52's (forgot them- Rock Lobster is cool even if I don't know a whole lot more of their songs) and Janes Addiction to my list (Heard some good songs by them)
