Importance of Punctuation

In this modern age of mobiles and texting, computers and e-mailing with use of emoticons i wonder if the need for punctuation is disappearing?

how many people know how to use a semi-colon? does it matter? is punctuation relevant when all you are going to write is 'cya l8r'?

or is the diminishing use of punctuation going to result in even more misunderstandings in the future?

take the sentence: kill not to fear the deed is good

what does it mean???

punctuate: kill, not to fear the deed is good
is very different from: kill not, to fear the deed is good

see what i mean?

I don't even use punctuation all the time anymore, and I used to be very conscientous about it.

Laziness.

But I do think, if anything, the prevailing lack of punctuation will make for more confusion. Yes indeed.

I guess if it's good enough for e.e. cummings and Emily Dickinson....

i've noticed that i'm using emoticons instead of punctuation :)

like that...instead of a full stop the smiley takes its place

it is now difficult to write letters longhand without using emoticons!

Yes, I see what you mean. I find it extremely annoying when people forget to use punctuation (or are just to lazy to bother).

I don't think that punctuation will entirely disappear; however, I do think that there will be less of it used on the Internet. I think it will usually be just commas and maybe the occasional period.

Who needs punctuation except for questions? Question marks are the only punctuation that totally changes the meaning of a sentance.

Ex: "Going to the store, mom." is a blatent statement.
"Going to the store, mom?" is asking if your mother is going to the store.

Big difference.

(by the way, i usually use punctuation. Usually...

Yeah, but "Going to the store, mom." is a fragment, lacking the subject "I". Furtheremore, in a long post (longer than one sentance) having to determine where one sentance ends and the next begins is so annoying....

Long passages without punctuation are incredibly tiresome to read.

The only way to abandon punctuation and keep the message unambiguous, is to adopt legal language. And that's a truly terrifying thought!

For those who argue it's unnecessary, try and punctuate the following sentence to change the meaning:

WOMAN WITHOUT HER MAN IS NOTHING

well I for one think that puncutation is quite stupid I mean I could just ramble on for hours and any person with half a brain would be able to figure out exactly what I was saying it's not like it's too hard to decipher plus puncutation takes too much time to use have you ever spent a minute looking for the question mark key some people who arent fast typers do not have the time to use puncutuation and any it isnt necessary you can understand what Im saying right because this sentence is totally readable I made sure that it was I will always check over my posts for competency but using punctuation is unecessary in my honest opinion and this thread is obsolete take my example as an example to use when showing examples about how using puncutation is unneccessary I give you my permission thank you
