According to Seth Shostak, SETI institute's senior astronomer, advances in computational power and radio telescope technology will allow us to discern radio trasmissions from any possible alien sources within our galaxy by 2020. His calculations will be published in the science journal Acta Astronautica next month and are based on Drake's Equation, Moore's Law and the Allen telescope.

My gf already made first contact. When she was a little kid she had a dream that Aliens abducted her (although she realized this much later in life when recallign the wierd dream) and they inserted something into her arm.

Wierd thing is theres a mark where she says it happened in her dream and when she touches the spot it feels strange.

either that or they played out a sexual fantasy that got out of hand.Similarly,they could be suppressed memories of sodomy and rape or stem from childhood abuse involving sexual elements such as an extremely masculine father figure or mother figure in early life.

Still,I would not dismiss all claims.Most of them are frauds,and why the hell would any sentient species wish to come here and carry out such procedures on humans?

Of course,IF we are dealing with sentient xenomorphs,and IF they are interacting with us in such a manner,we are making the assumption that they possess similar characteristics to humans.

All of our conjecture regarding aliens assumes that they evolved as carbon-water chemistry based life forms operationg in a temperature range of up to 30 degrees Celsius,essentially to us 'hot' biochemistry,as well as the assumption that their mental processes are similar to humans.

This is a possible fundamental error in our thinking,this underlying assumption assumed by many investigators,that is what I feel.

With alien life forms,we never know.There is a vast amount of distance involved in transmitting information encoded into electromagnetic radiation in the form of radio waves or laser link,assuming that thet utilise such technologies or methods similar to us.The information,while still intact,is imprinted onto radiation that degrades in strength and lucidity as it crosses such distances.

Perhaps the best way for us to transmit our presence to the galaxy at large is to output the pie algorithm over a broad range of frequencies.Pie is an irrational number,while Nature at large at a macroscopic level as a system is composed of rational numbers.

Perhaps only another sentient species would recognise an irrational number being transmitted on radio wavelengths and see it as proof of another species present within communication range.

Finally,to touch on something,I wish that the bloody Americans weren't putting out so much electromagnetic radiation in the form of radio and TV waves,in case other sentient species out there thought of Americans as representative of the human species,which they are not.

Americans are capable of many things,but they are not responsible enough with the power that they have,and their people such as fundamentalist Christians(most of them originating from America) and fundamentalist atheists are irresponsible and undisciplined with the freedom and power granted to them,trying to impose their views on the rest of the world.

Most people who get abducted are inbred hicks. That's probably why they abduct cows also, because they aren't sure whether the cows or hicks are the smartest being around.

I think any alien intelligence would be so fundamentally different to us, that it would be difficult to tell how intelligent they are. High technology doesn't necessarily make them smart; for example, the human race is 95% morons, riding on the shoulders of geniuses.

But back to the original, non-anally-fixated post: interesting, but it smacks a bit of the "within 20 years, artificial intelligence will be a reality" thing that they've been saying for the last 40 years. The whole issue is fraught with problems. I read recently about the development of "twisted" laser light, which allows for much greater message compaction and encryption, and would be very useful for interstellar communication (although how useful interstellar communication would be is a moot point). The SETI programme essentially relies on us detecting aliens who are trying to be heard: there might not be that many. And, of course, we might be in a position skin to that of pre-Columban native Americans standing on the Atlantic shore, looking east for smoke signals, seeing none, and concluding that there is nobody over the horizon.

First contact in twenty years? Hell, we've already had first contact. Hasn't anybody seen "Alien Autopsy"?

I'd go for the primes, myself. (numbers that are evenly divisible solely by themselves and one, for those of you who are young or from public education). Pi is too obvious, really, and it might be read as lovely nature thingy. Primes aren't something that can be repeated by a natural pattern without some major fluke of chance.

As for the topic, it's possible, but we're not going to be anywhere near the active party in it.
