Technically, the only answer that there can be is Army, as military=Army. Naval=Navy, military=Army. There is no equivalent term for the Air Force, as they are historically too new.

"The Navy have Traditions, the Army have Customs, the Air Force just have Bad Habits".

Speaking as a British Officer, your Marines are good (but dumb and too trigger happy), but your Army is utter pump. We have a saying: "All the gear, and no idea".

Sorry, but it's true.

But then we British can afford to be self-righteous. We are, after all, the best! Surely you realise that God is an English Gentleman?
But you are right, you Yanks bring the kit, the numbers and the money, and we'll bring the skills (and rob you blind of all your gucci kit at the first opportunity).

Depends on what you want. Marines are a better "ready react" force, while the Army has better Special Forces units. Navy makes the best pilots while the Air Farce makes the best bases. In all reality the Coast Guard are the first line of defense.

I beg to differ Sir...our Marines are not dumb...with all the information that a basic 0311 Ground Infantryman must absorb in order to be effective he can hardly be called dumb...trigger happy...I don't think so..we teach our Marines..."One Shot..One Kill" on the rifle range...we hit our targets..now as for our British cousins across the shore for whom we have shared customs as we are direct descendants of that august body of men I found them stuffy, boring, and prone to alchoholism.

I voted Navy because I'm active duty as is my husband. Is there a service that's the "best"? Well.....each has it's strong points and it's weak. My brother is an Army Ranger (and he's cocky to boot...ugh!); my other brother is a Marine (cocky too!). My grandfather did 27 years in the Air Force. I dunno. I love all of our boys and girls who choose this life.

The Marines make fun of us Navy because they say "we do all of the work and the Navy just gives us a ride" :). Everyone makes fun of the Air Force right now because while the rest of us have to take semi annual PRT (Physical Readiness Tests) that consist of a timed run, sit ups, push ups......the Air Force now does thier PRT's on Stationary Bicycles!!! WTF?? LOL.

But the Air Force sure gets the best bases and housing....for sure. Oh yeah...and we love the British!! :)

It sounds a bit like the TA (http://www.ta.mod.uk/) we have over in Britain. Occasionally refered to as the 'Toy Army.'

Don't get me wrong..the National Guard have their uses..they are extremely helpful during natural disasters, floods, tornadoes, and the like when you need a semi-disciplined core or relief workers...and the Guard has been heavily deployed to Iraq and previous combat theaters....but normally..a weekend wannabee-warrior.

I believe Winston Churchill said something to the effect that the only traditions the Royal Navy had was "rum, sodomy and the lash."

The British do have the best snipers in the world. But I think we are about equal. I voted army since my uncle is in the army.

I'm going to have to say US Army...I've had relatives in all the branches, but the most heavy combat experiences were World War II Army Infantry (including a grandfather in the 116th Infantry at Omaha Beach) and Army Air Corps (great-uncle shot down over Germany on a bomber mission). The US Army and Marines are usually a tough run, but overall, I'd have to say though the Marines win man-to-man, the Army has so many varying units from Armor to Airborne which no nation save maybe the British can top unit-wise. The army is the combat mainstay, the Marines are usually meant to be assault troops...

I can comfortably say however, that the British Army may be slightly better man for man, but I think that is partially due to their smaller numbers to the point that they can focus on personal slightly more, and their specialization. They have Armored brigades, or Air Assault brigades, or Para Regiments, but we have numbers and technology. However, the US and British as allies have always proven to be quite a team, the right combination of numbers, professionalism, and all-but international friendship. Our militaries are basically trained to work together... however..from what has happened in Northern Ireland over the years... The British can be just as trigger happy as they say Americans are. Also, some may call Americans too aggressive and trigger-happy, others may see it as the British being to cautious... there are some instances where that seems to be the case..Market Garden, etc... but overall, a British brigade matching up against an American brigade would be a very close call...it would come down to luck probably...

The navy, as they are able to do most every peice of combat from their ships. The marines, however, are a close runner-up.

Whoa...you have missed something there. The AF just went back to a timed 1.5 mile run together with push-ups and sit-ups. Nowadays, only the really lame will be doing the bike test which means a lot of smokers who somehow would do better on the bike test (which supposedly measures oxygen consumption) than marathon runners, now have to actually hit the track.
