The Berger Conspiracy

Berger (Clinton's former Security Advisor and informal advisor to the Kerry campaign) claims that he accidently walked out of the National Archives with a couple documents, some of which have disappeared. That's right. They "accidently" got stuffed into his jacket, his pants, and his socks.

Some (myself included) believe this was an attempt to keep embarressing documents out of the 9/11 commission's hands and protect what's left of Bill Clinton's legacy.

Others think that it's a right wing conspiracy that this was even released.

What do you think?

I think there are so many conspiracies about the right, why not one about the center. I wouldn't put it past them

I guess it would depend on what they were.

Considering the presentatation they are giving I doubt there would be anything damning. The picture they are painting is that the Intel groups were messed up and not working together. Both Clinton and the shrub didn't have the correct intel to make decessions.

Not much will come from this for one simple reason.

If there was a blaring screwup by Clinton(ie proof Bin Laden was going to attack), then the obvious question to the Shrub was why didn't you.....

Status quo. The Repubs made Nixon tapes disappear. The Demos make Clinton docs disappear......

I think if Reynes listened to the whole story with an open mind instead of regurgitating right-wing talking points, he might not sound like such a tool.

Any mention of the fact that this "investigation" has been going on for months and that even the Ashcroft Justice department has said it's likely that there won't be any charges filed? Didn't think so. Any mention of the fact that the claim that he stuffed documents in his clothing has been proven completely and utterly false? Nope. Any coincidence that this was leaked to the press two days before the 9/11 commission is scheduled to release its findings? Not a chance.

This is desperation politics, pure and simple.

I think you source all your news from one place (ever a good idea).

I think that the story about the "stuffing into socks" has been rumoured but denied by Berger and has not really been given a good foundation, and besides that just seems bloody unlikely. Hey - if he was being allowed to walk out without requiring his briefcase to be searched - why would you need to stuff things into your socks? and how big ARE his socks? Try serupticiusly stuffing an 8.5x11 doc into yours and see if you can walk normally at all, and with any expectation that the papers don't fall out after about 20 steps. That part of the story is just ludicrous in my opinion. The rest he has admitted to - including a couple of handwritten notes being placed in his jacket pockets.

I also think that your news source fails to mention that what he took out were COPIES of the originals that still exist in the archives. The copies are numbered which is how they knew that they were missing. The originals are still there. They do not let people have access to originals for just that reason.

And I think that those right-wing news sources (not included in your set - but I've seen 'em) that have attempted to tie this to Kerry are really crossing the line of believability. Even if you assumed some nefarious scheme, it would be in order to protect himself and/or Clinton. If you assumed it. Berger has had a pretty squeeky image regarding his honesty up until now.

That being said - I think what he did was negligent - especially given that aparently he can't account for some of the copies he took. He says that he must have accidentally destroyed them, but the fact that code-word level security papers cannot be accounted for is unacceptable.
